The Professional Walleye Trail (PWT) will make Sault Ste. Marie the third stop in the 2008 regular season. The Optima/Berkley Pro-Am will take place on September 11 - 13 as the walleye wizards of the PWT attempt to discover the magic to catching the walleyes of the St. Mary's River.

Current fishing reports from local professionals state that the "walleye numbers are way up in the river" right now and that fish are being caught in a range of depths and with varying methods. Still, veteran anglers of past PWT stops in Sault Ste. Marie know that although the walleyes tend to be a good average size, bringing in a limit each day can be a formidable task.

In 2005 many anglers found walleyes relating to weeds in Lake George while the main channel edges in 24 to 30 feet also produced fish. Most anglers in that event dragged some form of bottom bouncer and live bait as their primary tactic but we're guessing that many of the pros who saw the phenomenal results of the artificial lures only CAN-AM event earlier this month in Dryden will be incorporating Berkley Gulp! Alive, Northland Slurpies, or some other soft plastic in their approach.

Under the pro-am format, amateur/co-angler partners will fish with a different pro each day on the St. Mary's River and its connecting waters. Canadian waters will be open to contestants this year. A limited number of openings still exist for professionals at this event and the season finale to be held in Hudson, Wisconsin on October 15 - 17. The PWT web site, www.professionalwalleyetrail.com has schedules, tournament and site details, stats, photos, entry blanks and much more.

The exciting weigh-in ceremonies following each day's competition begin at 4:00 PM EST at Aune Osborn Park and are free and open to the public. A live leader board as well as daily news of the tournament can be found on the PWT web site.

The PWT is an integral element of the In-Fisherman Communications Network headquartered in Baxter, Minnesota and InterMedia, America's leading producer of targeted media. PWT professional partners include: Berkley, Lowrance Electronics, Optima Batteries, Minn Kota, Realtree, Outdoor Channel, Starcraft Marine, Northland Fishing Tackle, Stowmaster, Reef Runner, Yo-Zuri Quality Lures, Smooth Moves Seat Mounts, Kwik Pfyt Mud Flaps, Yellow Bird Planer Boards, Live Target, Allstar Graphics, Ram Mounts, Element Edge, Pflueger, Plano Tackle Systems, and Cannon.
