I am heading to stay at Mustang ridge next week. We will be fishing little hole a bit. I am new to fly fishing, so I am going to be getting some practice. But am also taking the spin rod with spinners and rapalas. Any suggestions on types? Also, is it worth to try some jigs on the river? I have never used jigs in a river, only on a lake. Also wondering if there are any good spots to fish off the shore close to mustang ridge? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

River is hot with everything! I just got back from fishing the river below Little Hole for three days. See my report on the Utah Fly Fishing board, here:

#7 Rapalas, and small dark or white tube jigs (dark ones were best), and black marabou jigs worked silly-good on spin rods in the faster riffles.

Jim is pretty much right on with the river, I've always used a cd #5 rapala in gold/black or perch. also have done good on a gold kastmaster. black or olive green maribu jigs will also work good. fish all of these lures by casting up stream and reeling down. fly fishing is not my deal so maybe someone else can help on that. later chuck

Thanks guys, that really helps. I am excited to fish both fly and spin in the river. What about the lake from the shore? Is it even worth trying around the mustang ridge area?

[#000000]Before we had a boat we fished the Mustang and Dam area extensively. And yes, it is worth to fish there. Maybe not so much this time of year but it is still worth it because you can get nice fish from there. [/#000000]

[#000000]I can count all the lake trout we have caught from shore there on both of my hands, but rainbows and bass are something else. What has worked well are spoons in different sizes like the L&J Coyote, Strike Master, and Kwikfish if you can attach a weight on your line and make them sink and jig or retrieve them. Also tube jigs. [/#000000]

[#000000]The colors I always liked for there are purple, dark brown, camot, motor oil, and white. Just throw cast them as far as you can and let out line so they can sink deep. Then just jig and retrieve them. Do this along the shoreline at and cliffs and you will get good fish. [/#000000]

[#000000]The deep cliff/drop off areas around there like Sunny Cove and the Dam are very good for doing this. You just have to be patient and let your line sink slowly by casting as far as you can. That is why I always liked the smaller jig weights. [fishin][/#000000]

Thats exactly what I wanted to hear. We will be fishing the river most of the time, but would like to jig a bit also to relax. I can't wait. We will be there next Thurs - Sat. I will post our results. Thanks everyone.

[#000000]If you try the Dam area, make sure to make a few casts from the side closest to the Dam by the stairway there. It is just ahead or across (East) of the picnic table there by the parking lot. That cliff use to hold nice sized brown trout so it is worth a try. [/#000000]
