One of my favorite methods of fishing is floating live hoppers on the surface of streams. There is nothing like a huge brown attacking the surface for a big old hopper.

So anyway, I headed over to a favorite stretch of the South Fork yesterday. Took about 30 minutes to catch 10 hoppers, even though they where everywhere [crazy].
I threaded one on a size 6 hook and launched it up the river (Gotta use big ones, no wieght). After a few casts, I had the first explosion on top of the water and landed a nice 15 inch brown. The day continued with sucess, and got to the point where I was passing on the smaller browns to save my hoppers.
The biggest was 17-18 inches, the river was pretty low, but it worked out pretty good. Had a blast!!!

thanks for sharing that is a nice fish. I grew up in wyoming and we'd catch some really nice browns this time of year using grasshoppers. We had a hard time finding them though there. My backyard in Farr west has many big grasshoppers I was thinking I need to go back to my home town and do this soon. I caught a huge brown once using a grasshopper this time of year.

In my opinion, it's the funnest way to catch trout.
Flyfishing with dries is comparable, but when those browns see that hopper swimming around, there is no doubt in thier mind that it's not real and they explode on them.
Watching the whole process is amazing! Just goes to show you that there is nothing like natural bait to catch fish. [Wink]
