I decided to target some of the rainbows rumored to hang out near the bouys in the Rock Cliff arm. I got there early (around 5:00pm.) I threw flies to no avail for hours. Not even a bite. Finally after the sun set I started to see little dimples on the surface from feeding fish. They weren't jumping like a respectable trout but just sucking bugs off the surface like a carp. I continued to fish without much luck( one small bite). So I decided a change of flies was due. First cast and about two cranks on the reel and I had one on. About two more cranks and he was off. A couple of casts later and I had another. He was jumping and stripping drag like crazy. When I got him in I found that the upper fly was hooked in the dorsal, line was wrapped around him like a mummy and the lower hook was in his mouth.

I had a couple more bites but that seemed like that was going to be it for the evening. I put my original fly back on. But still nothing until it was dark when I hooked one more on the original fly.

Both fish were 14-15" rainbows and both volunteered to come home for dinner.

I love to fish that area in my tube, but I have never had much success at or near the surface. I had nights when there were fish surfacing all around me and none of them would touch anything I put on the surface. I go deep with a Jakes and I can usually hook a few. From what I have seen, the ones we see on the surface are the small ones.

Even though they were only dimpling the surface I could still tell some were pretty good size.
