Anyone ever used one of these? Seems like it might be a good idea if it works. Just tie the sensor to the tube and go where you need, occaisonally looking at your wrist.
I'm also looking at some of the fishin buddy units out there, but since I fly fish, the fishing buddy could get in the way.
Thanks

They seem like a cool idea, but, I do know a couple of people that DID buy one. The screen is just too small to be very effective, and the earlier models (don't know if they have improved) the transmitter didn't work if cold, which most waters are here.
Plus don't you have to replace the whole transmitter when the battery dies?

I have one of those units and while they will "find fish" they are at times overly sensitive (lots of false hits).. they can also be hard to spot (you need to locate where the floating unit is to figure out where the fish may be) and since I used mine from shore and cast it out on a spare rod.. I found it to be a little cumbersome at times to have to carry a spare rod..

I never used mine on a float tube but I would think that if you got it out far enough to do any good.. you would be getting yourself tangled in to it a lot.. (just a guess)..

they (hummingbird) also have that same set up but instead of the wrist receiver you use a small "console" receiver that you could use say velcro to hold it in a convenient place on the tube..

now with all of that said there are several tubers on this board that use a fishing buddy set up.. or a similar type of fish finder on their tube/toons/pontubes.. one of which is FG who fly fishes only.. maybe she and other fly flingers will give their views.. :-)

[cool][#0000ff]We have discussed that unit several times on this board over the years. The consensus of opinion, among those who have tried them, is that they are more of a novelty than a serious fishing tool.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Float tubers do not need a lot of the fancy readouts favored by many boat anglers. We usually fish shallower waters and we seldom go at high speed. But, we do need good info on depth, bottom contour, temperature...and of course fish. The good news is that there are plenty of inexpensive units on the market that will fulfill all those...with low enough wattage that you can get by with using small SLA batteries for a full day of fishing.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]The Fishin Buddy line is used and enjoyed by a lot of tubers and tooners. If you mount it on your tube creatively, it should not create too much line grabbing distraction. But, anything and everything that sticks out WILL catch your line.[/#0000ff]
