The fishing is still good at Henry's . Just of the cliff in 13' to 15' of water . Water Temp. is 51 Degrees on the bottom . Three of us caught 14 fish yesterday . Curt G.

Sounds great. Were you fishing from the shore or boat? Flyfishing or bait fishing? I have never been, but will be going in a couple of weeks. Any helpful hints would be great.

Right on! I had the best luck in that area, but the monsters were on the other side. Not saying there weren't big fish off Cliffs, but BIGGER fish on the other side.

I was bait fishing from a boat . Where is the other side ? Near the hatchery , over by Staleys or over by County Boat Dock . Your right alot of fish near the cliffs but nothing over 6 pounds . Thanks Curt

The County Boat Dock, and with a boat that wouldn't be a problem, but for me with the dock closed it would be allot of rowing and kicking[laugh]
It's all good!

I am planning on heading up there in a few weeks. Where is the best place to launch a boat from?

Rose's, State Park, and if the boat isn't HUGE, cliffs. Just the county boat dock is closed for repairs.

Just curious but do you have any problems with fish dying releasing them after catching them on bait? The marshmallow worm thing seems like they would get hooked deep sometimes? With a 2 fish limit there and everyone wanting a wall hanger, I hope smaller fish are not paying the price for this.

I don't keep many fish at Henry's . When I catch a fish I am not going to keep , I cut the line as close to the mouth as possible . Don't take them out of the water or handle them . I see people net them and dig the hook out and then let them go . Curt G.

No problems here also. I fish barbless hooks, could be why I loose em too[crazy]

So how is the water right now? Has the weeds and moss started to disappear yet? I also am interested in stopping in to B&S Flies that I have heard people talk about, where are they located? I am also curious if people use just floating line or if sinking tip would be a good choice. I am trying to get things setup for a trip up there in about 3 weeks.

The only time I would use a floating line would be for deep nymphing. Henry's is a FULL SINK line lake. I would suggest an Intermediate, or a TYPE II or a TYPE III in either a Density Compensated or a Wet Cell. The Pro's recommend the Wet Cell because of the belly. BUT, don't forget to take your floating. There COULD be some good sub surface action.
B.S. Flies are in the POND'S LODGE parking lot. On the west side on your way up.

I was afraid you would say sinking line. I have always fished floating since I usually fish the South Fork from PaliSades to American Falls. I am a total novice when it comes to sinking line. I would not know where to start since I usually use dry flys and terrestrial patterns. That is why I was thinking the floating line with a sinking tip and leader to see if I can get the hang of that and then move to full sinking line. I have not fished Henry's in over 10 years and that was bait fishing. I plan on doing some bait fishing and trolling but figured on trying my luck with the fly rod also since the biggest fish on the fly rod so far has been a 4lb rainbow. The line on my rod atm is almost 15 years old so I figured it's time to buy some new line, but I do not want to buy a line strictly for Henry's and not be able to use it on the river.

I do use a TYPE II on rivers. I don't care for sink tips, but don't get me wrong, they have their place. I like a full sink on the river with an across drift down....no mending. Plus I am able to get flies down to the zone without LEAD or the substitute. Let the line put an unweighted fly in the zone by merely lengthening or shortening the leader. Plus, no need for TAPPERED leaders on a sinking line.

Looks like I will have to try a sinking line. I guess no better time than the present to learn to use it. I will buy another floating when I get back for my other rod. Or, better yet, my current rods are 7 and 8 wt and I have been wanting a new TFO 4-5 wt, so I could get a new 4-5 and put the floating line on it. [Wink] You say you don't need tapered leaders on sinking line. I always thought leaders were all tapered, or do you use something different? What size (lb) of leader do you recommend for Henrys?

At least 6. On sinking lines I just use regular fishing line. I prefer Fluorocarbon and I prefer P-Line brand. 3' to 5' 6 lb, put a loop in the end and loop to loop it straight to the fly line. Presentation is not an issue with a sinking line, so why waist money for a tapered leader.
For a second rod, the TFO would be an excellent choice. I think if I were you (and this is just me) I would make it the 5 weight. Because I do allot of stillwater along with rivers and I will use a 5 on Daniels or even Strawberry. I would try on one Henry's but I just know I would hook into another 30+[laugh]

Just go to Walmart and buy the cheapest fly reel they have and put some sinking line on it. You dont need a $500 fly reel for 17" cuthroats. They barely fight anyway. I dont understand why people spend that much on a reel. It just holds the line on the rod. When you get a big fish, use your hand to help the drag on your $19 walmart special!!

That thought wave has a chance of costing you the one you have been waiting for your entire life. At least go with a $34.95 Okuma. [sly]

I bought some Scientific Anglers wet cell sinking WF7 type 2 and put on my 8wt rod. Took it down to the Snake the other night and tried it out throwing streamers. A little different compared to the floating line. I think the hardest thing to learn is to keep it tight. You can not see it under the water like you can a floating line on top, so it is hard to tell when the line is tight. I did manage to land 1 bow about 12" and had a few others bites. Weather was not that great.
I did order a new pole in a 5 wt. Went with an Orvis Clearwater II 4pc 9' and Batten mid arbor III reel. It was cheaper than the TFO and has a much better reel compared to the cheap Cabelas reel they sell on the TFO. Also the 25 year warranty was hard to pass up. [Image: happy.gif] Now the wait, it is killing me all ready. The browns are about to start running. A 5lb brown on a 5wt should be fun.

PS- I have a 7wt Walmart special beginner kit I bought for $24.95 about 15 years ago. I have caught many fish with it including using it in Alaska. It has been a good rod and I still carry it for a backup in the RV. Main reason for a new pole is my others are 7-8wt and 2 pc. I want to try a smaller 5wt and wanted a 4pc since they are easier to transport in the car or RV not to mention walking in to some small streams.

Oh yeah, you have to keep the line a little tighter, that is why I cast across and let it drift.
I think you made a very wise choice on rod and reel. USA MADE and not an arm and a leg. Did you get the Mid-Flex 7.5?
As far as the Wally World special, if it works, then that is what counts.
You will notice however, that more expensive rods are less taxing on your arm and they cast fantastic.
I do own very expensive rods, but that doesn't keep me from buying less expensive. I won't compare them to the upper end, but sometimes you find one that feels so right.
