Hi there gvanzant,

As you know, I read your article and asked that one question on the color indicator break, but regretted not having included another one. My other questions are 'Have you heard of people using lead core in the salt for say shallow water rockfish?' The guys that flyfish for huge lings and others in the shallows at the Channel Islands and Santa Cruz use a super-sinking line so..... Have you heard if lead core line, actually the covering, stands up against brackish (like the Salton Sea) or saltwater? If it's dacron or stuff like the old spectra, it might well need cleaning after a dunking in the salt.

Awaiting your comments.

JapanRon: Rock cod? I hadn't heard that one but it doesn't suprise me. Leadcore can be obtained to #45 lb test but I would guess the reel would have to be at least a 6/0 to hold 200 yards of the stuff. I don't know what the line is I suspect it's a Nylon weave. After 2 years it gets a little fuzzy so I really don't know. It wouldn't hurt to wash it off afterwards though. I don't think saltwater trolling with the leadcore would work. Most of the fish caught in fresh water don't run off like barracuda or a yellowtail and in most cases you can simply hold the trout at bay until he quits. We were catching yellowtail last year slow trolling squid 50 feet deep using 4-6 ounce trolling sinkers and that was also tough. They kept breaking off on the initial run. With lead line it would only take two direction reversals by the fish before he kinked it. George

Hi there gvanzant,

No! No! Rod Cod not me! ha ha My cranking arm's warrantee is only good for about 150 feet. Actually I should have clarified my 'shallow water rockfish' as being fish that were in 50 to 80 feet of water, if I remember the show correctly. I wish I had taped that show. There were fising softbaits and bucktails on light spinning gear and flyrodding with the super sinking line.

So, on the line color, it's that you judge the number of colors out by the color that is at the waterline not what is at the rod tip?

JapanRon: Yeh, OK, I got it for shallow rock fish up north and lead line. I'll bet you could splice 20 feet of lead line onto your flyline and reach those critters easily. I have about 15 feet spliced onto my surf fly outfit, but I certainly need that 12 weight rod. Sounds like fun though. That lead line on the fly rod will strip back through the guides but won't easily go onto the reel. Yes, when you freespool the leadcore the instant the previous color reaches the water you can say that's the total distance at 30 yards a color, or ten yards as we old coaches' say. In conclusion diving once off of San Miguel Island in 40 to 100 feet for lobster I personally saw no less than a hundred ling cod resting on a rock shoal bottom about 20 by 30 yards wide. I swear some of them were as big as me. It was awesome
The water at that point was about 40 feet. How about a 60 lb ling on a 12 weight fly rod?
