I went up to my regular stomping grounds, Silver Lake Flat this morning to make sure my car could survive the UEA trip this Friday. And to test out some new tackle.
I got started fishing around 7:30am, no one but myself was there.
I first tried out some fluorocarbon I just bought, but it got tangled up and casted poorly. So I put on my regular fireline spool. I will probably just use the fluro for some leader.
I was testing out a few lures I planned to use on the coming vacation, but with the lower water and high weeds, it wasn't the place. So I put on the tasmanian devil and started working. It was a slow first 20 minutes or so and didn't get any bites. I was starting to wonder since the fish weren't rising like they regularly do. Then I started to get into it.
I pulled up my first brookie. It was probably around 9" and I let him go. I then fished out a small bow, maybe 10" and turned him loose. After that, I caught a 12" and was thinking about keeping him since the fish range from 6"-14" in Silver, but I reluctantly put him back. I was rewarded. The next cast, I got a hit. At first I thought it might be the same guy because it felt around the same size. But once I got him to the shore it was much larger. Turned out to be a 13.5" fat bow weighing in at just over a pound. I forgot my stringer so I just had to makeshift a livewell out of a plastic bag until I left. He managed to stay alive until I packed up at 9 and left.
I kept fishing after that. It was around 8:15 I think. I got at least 5 fish following the lure to the shore. I watched a few of the fish pound the lure with their nose from about 10 feet out, but they didn't hit the hook. After watching the fish just follow I moved over a bit and picked up a small sickly looking bow and put him back. The next 25 minutes I didn't get any followers or hits. At 8:45, I put on the jakes and got a hit my first cast. I kept the fish on for a 15 feet or so, but once I raised my pole the hook came loose. It was just a little guy so I didn't mind.
Not a bad morning, 5 fish in less than a hour with a pretty large fish for that lake to take home for dinner.
