Walker Lake is what is left from a prehistoric lake which covered much of the Western United States.

Walker Lake is a unique desert lake. It is one of only five relatively fresh, deep water lakes in the world supporting a substantial fishery {Pyramid Lake also in Nevada and three lakes in Central Asia}.

Walker Lake has long been renowned for its Lahontan Cutthroat Trout. and has been a favorite spot for anglers.

[cool]Sounds like fun, but family responsibilities are gonna keep me close to home. I do question the summer scheduling of the event, since the best times for the cutts are early and late in the year. The fish go deeper and are harder to find during warm months.

I used to fish Pyramid Lake, near Reno, for the bigger Lahontans in that water. 20 pounders are not uncommon each year. The rod and reel record, from better times, was over 40 pounds...and records show fish approaching 60 taken commercially in nets. In addition to having bigger fish, Pyramid also is better for fishing big flies and lures from shore, during the cold months. The fish also go deep here when the temps rise.

I only fished Walker once, and not too successfully. As I recall, it was during the middle of the summer and we were dredging deep. However, some of my former fishing buddies from Sacramento used to fish it often and did well on good numbers of fish over 5 pounds.

Fishing the cutts in Walker is supposedly much like fishing Bear Lake. First find the fish and then either troll them up, using downriggers, or vertical jig them with something that resembles their primary forage species...the "tui chub". The water is not as pretty as Bear Lake, and is highly alkaline. Not many species of fish can even survive in it...especially the delicate hatchery pet rainbows.

Here's a link to another website that has a map of the lake and some of the better fishing areas...along with an interesting writeup. If you guys get a trip put together, have fun. And, for those who don't like trolling deep, take your fly rod and head up the Walker River for some great stream brown trout fishing.
