Arrived at Yuba at 7:00AM w/bigguyone1. Cold, cold cold. 21 degrees. Colder than the heart of a Hollywood hooker. Guides constantly iced up. Royal pain. Stayed that was until after 9:00AM. Then it was beautiful. We threw spinnerbaits, in line spinners, swim baits, crank baits.
Bigguyone caught a 30" pike at 9:30 and another one shortly afternoon. I keep watching him intently to see what he is doing that I'm not and one thing I've observed is that he is a casting machine. Non-stop. The only time he lets up is to change lures and that only takes a second as he has four rods at the ready with different baits.
Me on the other hand have to stop for a ciggie, cup of coffee, to BS or warm my hands and admire the scenery.
There were no other boats on the lake. The courtesy dock is still in the water at Oasis, but I don't think it will be there for long.
We've put 21 pike in my boat this year and bigguyone has caught 9 of them (in 2 trips). All of them save 3 small ones were released. Granted that is not alot of pike considering how many trips I have taken down there forsaking all other types of fishing, but it does demonstrate that it is possible to catch northerns with regularity. Incidentally, 8 of those fish were 17 pounds or bigger.
Until I can find a body of water that has produced as many big fish that fight so hard and don't have to be dredged out of 100' of water, I'll just keep fishing Yuba. Onebigguy1 has about talked me into going to pineview to fish for tiger muskies. I don't know how I can resist watching the master at work, pursuing the true giants of the Esox family. Now that ought to be a lesson. Tight lines
