[cool][#0000ff]Majja and I drove down the LOOOOOOONG ramp at Rock Cliff about 7 AM. Air temp a BRISK 19 degrees and a stout easterly breeze to make it more noticeable. We were joined on the road/ramp by Tlspyder13 and then by MisterCompletely. We all got launched by a little after 7:30. Water temp just a notch over 51...3 degrees cooler than a week ago...and a few inches down in water level.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Spyderman scored first, with a rainbow within the first few minutes. I had a couple of bumps and then I brought in two "cookie cutter" 14 inchers within a few minutes of each other...both on a hot orange fly with some olive crystal chenille on the rear. They were still munching orange, but I could not buy a hit on my orange spinners.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Spyderman kicked off up the north shoreline, to the buoys. He got lost in the mist, but announced over the walkie talkies that he was finding action both on flies and on an orange tube jig. Majja worked around in the same general area I was for awhile and then he moved toward the buoys too...where he DID score a nice bow and several other hits. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I kept changing my fly patterns around, trying some of the different orange concoctions I turned out on the bench this week. A "Halloween Bugger"...with black body and hackle and hot orange tail...was a hot producer for a while...going 7 fish in 7 casts during one lively session.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]About 9 AM the east breeze (and ripple) died down and the fish went deeper. I started bottom bouncing in deeper water with my pale perch roadrunner and caught a few more fish. When the west breeze and ripple started up I caught a couple more on flies and then the lake got busy. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]In short order there were several boats all over the end of the RC arm...both trolling and anchored. One of the boaters was BFTer LloydE and his boatmate. They scored a nice mess of bows on the old reliable pop gear and worms. Two other boats...one towing the other...pulled right in behind where I was kicking and anchored within a few feet of me. They began catching trout on bubbles and worms.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Over on the north shore was a bank tangler who had been reeling in fish all morning. We saw him put some in his cooler but never saw him release any. Probably way over his limit. We were gonna call the DWR but forgot when we got back to the car and the phone.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]MisterCompletely stuck with his flyrod all morning and announced that he had caught "a few" as we passed on the water. Spyderman probably caught the most...but I do not know how many. I brought in somewhere between 13 to 15 rainbows...from 14" to 16"...and lost one piggy 20 incher at the tube. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]All in all, a fun morning, with a few fish, but not nearly as active as a week ago. Good to see you guys.[/#0000ff]

What a great morning! I got to meet Tlspyder13 and chatted just briefly with Tubedude. I thought it would be fun to bring only the fly gear this time, and I was right, I had a blast with those feisty rainbows. I put on an orange and black rubber-legged "thing" and never even changed flies, it caught fish all morning.

Here's TD lost in the morning fog. He says he was catching fish, but we couldn't actually see him....

I never think to take many pictures. Too much trouble or I don't think of it at all. Anyway, here's one of a fat 15 incher that I did snap.

I ended up catching 9, and brought home the last 3. About 6 more auto-released themselves. I'm NOT an experienced fly fisher, so I felt good about catching as many as I did.

What time in the day were you fishing and where?? How late in the day will they bite on flies? Are they biting in the evenings on flies? Just before dark, or just after?

Thanks,
Curtis

I was at Jordanelle Rock Cliff at daybreak. Wish I could give you more info, but I don't know. There were 3 other fly fishers that headed out just as I was coming in, but of course I don't know how they did. I saw only a few fish rising, but there was a lot of power bait floating around and they might have been gulping that. I would think it would be pretty good in the evening, but I don't know. I was fishing deep with fast sinking line. Someone else could probably give you better info on evening fishing etc.

This is what I was dragging about 3 1/2 feet behind a bubble while casting a tube jig.
[inline "Jordanelle 10-24 2.JPG"]

The fly I was using had a silver tail instead of the white but it it so thrashed the orange and most of the tail are now missing.

Caught fish from 5ft of water all the way out to 30ft. All but one fish caught on the fly was before ten in the morning though. Most of my fish on the fly came in about 12 to 18ft of water. Also tipped the fly with a little worm.

Nice to meet you. Always nice to put a face with a name. How deep of water were you working? I never knew were anybody was until that fog burned off.

[cool][#0000ff]There are fish all over the Rock Cliff arm of Jordanelle right now...from shallow to deep. As mentioned, there is even decent fishing from the steep shoreline to the west of the launch ramp. The most consistent fishing...and most popular with boaters...is in the old channel that runs along the steep rock shoreline to the south of the ramp. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]The fish do move around in their search for food, and you will do well to keep moving until you find a concentration of fish. But, once you do, the fishing can be fast until they move on.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The best fishing for flies and lures is during low light periods...daybreak and again just before dark. It is also better if there is a slight breeze to ripple the water. The rainbows continue to bite after dark and fishing a big black bugger will produce some nice fish. But, this time of year it really gets cold fast when the sun disappears and most wimpy anglers don't stick it out.[/#0000ff]

Good meeting you too. I didn't have my sonar because I didn't bring my rod holder because I only brought a fly rod, so I didn't know exactly what the water depth was, but I fished mostly close to the south wall and fairly near the buoys but not quite to the buoys. I was definitely fishing deep with my fast sink fly line, I snagged the bottom 3 times. I kicked constantly as well as imparting some extra life by twitching the line a little with my left hand. I think you were still out fishing when I came in. You're a diehard, aren't you? I know, it's hard to stop while the fish are still biting.

Hey TD, did you snag my Sahara Shimano reel and St. Croix pole while you were up there? I think the fish that ripped the pole out of my hands was a monster!! Like you said, it can be what ever I want it to be.

I was hoping that some of the BFT'ers would snag it off the bottom and I would count myself lucky. Oh well, I am glad that you did well again. Those rainbows are nice, and they fight good too. I need to get back up there soon.

[cool][#0000ff]Sorry, no such luck. I didn't do much bottom bouncing, and without a GPS point (and a GPS system) it would be difficult for anyone to just go up there and dredge it up.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Sorry for your loss.[/#0000ff]

Sorry for the late post as I left for a quick run to Paso del Robles for a quick wine run with my Father in Law ans Brother in Law. It was a great day fishing with all of you. I really enjoyed it. Once again I came away with a lot of new knowledge and great memories that I hope to repeat. Sorry now pics from my camera this time the cold took a toll on the already week batteries, so I just have the pics in my minds eye.
