I fished the south fork yesterday for a couple hours with no sign of fish. I didn't see a single rise all day so i nymphed all day with no luck. Granted I am brand new to fly fishing been out less than ten times while teaching myself. I'm sure more experienced anglers could have done better, but I covered alot of water with nothing.
Hold on though there is reason for me posting about a skunking....
In any movie or tv show when no one is having success fishing what do they catch?
an old boot or shoe right?
well
I caught a flip flop.
frustrating when it happened but it makes me laugh now and I thought i would share that.

Usually this time of year when they spawn they congregate in certan areas. I fish the river down in the canyon and usual hot spots are deserted. you find out where they are spawning and you can get pretty good scuccess. I caught about 5 16-18 spawners the other day. Just keep looking for them. Try midges and you'll catch the smaller fish. Try glow bugs and you might tempt a big spawning brown. Good luck!

Scotty,

Being a self taught (15 yrs ago) fly fisherman myself I know it can get frustrating at times, then one day it all comes together and the light switches on, keep reading, asking questions and picking brains of other fly fisherman and you will get some good advice. I agree with Yungun, now is the time for glo bugs, I prefer to fish behind the Redds and you will pick up some hungry bows and browns, I prefer not to fish directly over Redds during the spawn because you will end up fouling alot of fish. thanks very much for the tips and support in teaching myself.
I appreciate it.
does anyone know any access points for the south fork of the ogden in the canyon?
I'm still kind of skittish when it comes to places with private land surrounding.

and one thing that has helped me is the county libraries. They have a surprising amount of books on fly fishing.

Any of the campgrounds are closed now and gov. property. Start there and stay in the water. I havent had any problems with cabin owners in that area.
