Myself and three others went up to the Berry with out boat that we just purchased. Previously, we had float tubes and a raft, but we found a great deal on a used boat and decided to pick it up.
We launched from Strawberry Marina and immediately started trolling. My brother got a few hits while trolling a lucky craft 78 but didn't land any. We continued trolling and I finally hooked up with a slot Cutty, caught it on a Rapala Minnow Rap in ghost brown color.
We later cruised around the lake and found a bay and decided to anchor down. My buddy caught another on a blue sinking Rapala. It was getting a lil' windy so we decided to head deeper into the bay where the wind was shielded. We kept trying rapalas and tube jigs, but didn't have much luck for some reason so we decided to resort to the good ole stuff, the power bait! And boy was it a good decision, we were literally getting bites every cast, but we were landing 1 out of every 2. The biggest was a 23" Cutty and we also caught two niced size Rainbows, both estimated at around 17 inches, very nice and fat. We had to leave at 1, but I bet if we had stayed longer, we would have definitely landed a bunch more. Overall, a great day, a great first day with the "new" boat. Looks like we'll be heading up this Saturday, and weather permitting, will be there the entire day.

[#000000]Very interesting about the powerbait. To tell you the truth I can't remember the last time I used the stuff. I wonder if it was the color of the powerbait that made the day? What colors was the lures you used when trolling? How deep did you troll?[/#000000]

Who knows, maybe it was the color. We were using ghost brown and aurora blue lures and were trolling them about 8-12 feet deep is my guess. I tried adding on a sinker, creating a 4 to 5 foot leader, but that didn't seem to work. In regards to the tube jigs, we were tipping them with worm, maybe I need to tip them with chub, do you think that would be the difference? We were both vertically jigging, trolling, and casting and retrieving them with minimal success.

[#000000]Alot of reports on here about the Berry say that chub/sucker/carp meat is better. But I think the biggest differene is finding groups of fish and using the proper presentation. I personally prefer to use a whole worm on the tubes and let it dangle similar to fishing for bass. [#000000]I think Strawberry is a very interesting place to fish. It seems like there are some special places and techniques to catch the really big cutts. Lots of people catch ones up to 26, 27 inches on the tubes, rapalas, LC pointers and others. It is like at the Gorge, you can catch many small laker pups on a certain jig/technique, but the big ones want it another way. [/#000000]

I used to troll with tube jigs with 1/2 a worm, but found that I caught a bunch more using chub meat.

What color power bait were you using?

LuvThemCuts,
My bro was using "Lime Twist" which I believe is a mixture of green and yellow and my other buddy was using just plain chartreuse. Of the 11 or so years that I have fished the Berry, I have found that chartreuse powerbait works the best. I have always fished from shore up until this summer when I got my float tube, and now that we have our boat, we will always be using that from now on. I'll see if I can find a way to get some chub/sucker meat or maybe just try a new technique with the tube jigs.

Line Dangler,
I'll give the tube jigs another try for sure this weekend, because it seems as if everyone else is having great success. Maybe I'll try a smaller size. Anyways, I'll bring back a report in regards to our success

I'll most likely be hiiting up the berry tomorrow and I'll let you know how good carp meat works.
