[cool][#0000ff]This was one of those days that started out bad, got worse and then went downhill from there.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]TubeBabe and I wanted to close up the soft water season on Scofield. Hit every red light out of town leaving Salt Lake and every red light going through Spanish Fork. Then, just as we were turning onto the road to Scofield, off Hwy 6, we got stopped by a 107 car train...plus engines.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Weather forecast said 30 degrees for an 8 AM launch time. It was 10 degrees colder. Big sheets of ice floating in the dam channel and out between the hwy and the island. It's on the way.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]No fish showing on the surface anywhere. Tried soaking a minnow and throwing bubble and fly from shore while we waited for the sun to hit the water. Nary a tweak.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Finally launched our tubes about 8:30. Beautiful and calm...too calm. No fish on sonar in the 37 degree water. Kicked out to 19 feet...about the deepest water we could find. Saw suspended fish here and there, but nothing near the top or bottom. Threw all kinds of flies and lures...and soaked minnows and worms...high and low. Nada, zip, zilch. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Talked to TubeBabe on the walkie talkie. We decided to give it another half hour and then get out and go to Huntington. That did it. She popped a 13 inch cutt and I brung in a couple of "teen incher" bows...one 14 and one 15 inches. Big whoop. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Nothing for the next half hour so we started in to the car. I had one mega-whack on a fly I was dragging...but missed it. I also had a major pull down on my little roadrunner...the one I had caught both of the rainbows on. Inexperienced fish. Blew it.r[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Once we got back into water less than 15 feet deep we saw no more fish on sonar. There were several vehicles of bank tanglers along shore. We stopped and talked to some of them. Nobody had even one bite all morning.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Cruised by E-Lake. No frozen zebra mussels in view. Water still surprisingly high and ice in the calm shallow areas.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Can't remember the name of the little lake right beside the road between E-Lake and Huntington, but it had quite a bit of ice already. A few hard cold nights and it will be thick enough for Fuzzy...at least 1". Pic attached if someone wants to identify it.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Got to Huntington just about noon, and planned to pull down to our launch spot and munch lunch. Pulled off the road at the little area near the upper end of the lake. Bad move. As soon as I was past the no return point, my car skidded and slid down to the bottom and ended up against a log. Good they put it there after putting in that ATV trail or we would have gone clear into the lake. The melting snow had turned the short access road to 60 weight oil. Been there several times before, but not under those conditions. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]No problem. I put the tranny into compound low 4X4 and started to ease...sideways. What the hey? Got out to see what was happening. Nothing was happening. My 4 wheel drive was not locking in. Tried several times to get it to work. Spin city with the back tires...nothing with the front. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]We were trying to get some brush and branches up under the tires when first a DWR truck stopped to offer help...but did not have a tow rope. Then a nice young lady in a white DNR truck stopped behind him and she DID have a tow rope. Both had good working 4X4 and high traction tires. Between them they got us back up on the road...with some damage to my rear bumper and a trashed and bent tailpipe assembly. Had to put a strap on the pipe and strain to bend it up out of the way so it did not rub the tire or drag on the road.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Kinda killed the time schedule and the fishing urge. Headed for home. At least...thanks to our helpful outdoors agencies...we didn't have to spend the night in the mud at Huntington. And, our mechanic has been missing us anyway. We oughtta help his Christmas be merrier, even if he ruins ours. [/#0000ff]

hum i wouldered what dummy tryed to go down that road in a 2 wheel drive!! lol..

i was at huntington and clevland.. cleavland was slow and about 2/3 frozon over with 1/8 to 1/4 inch of ice.. so about 1:30 headed to huntington for 2 18 inch fat tigers.. [sly]

oh BTW the lake is bolgers res.. lol
[signature]
I beg to differ...

That's Beaver Dam. Boulger is one lake closer to E-Lake and harder to see from the road.

Wow, Tubedude. That's not the kind of adventure you were looking for, no doubt. Glad you were rescued by your well spent tax dollars.[Wink]

Sorry the fishing wasn't spectacular. Lookin' cold up there.

Thanks for the update of the area.

well i never looked at the pic.. but looking at it you are wrong as well.. that is CC pond or to most bench's pond..

that sux

typically the worst day fish is... well... but sounds like you found a day where maybe I was better off at work [Wink]

I was up at Scofield just about this time last year with the same conditions, ice forming and all. I fished for three hours with one dink bow to show for it. I finally got tired of searching and went over by the island/inlet area to eat lunch and bs and absolutely slayed the cutts and bows in 8' of water. I haven't been up there recently but I imagine it would be a good area to try if you make a revenge trip.

I was at scoffield as well. Launched at 9:30. broken skim ice near ramp, a little near the island, but scoffield has a long way to go before ice over. Water temp was 39 degrees almost all day. Absolutely beautiful weather once it warmed up a little. All remnant ice was gone before noon.

I caught 1 tiger trout, 2 lbs 2 oz and two rainbow about the same size. 3 fish in 8 hours seemed like Yuba. No one we talked to had done much. Have no idea why fishing was so slow.

Should have gone to strawberry or maybe fish lake. Maybe over the week-end if Yuba doesn't becon me back for a final try for a 25 pounder. Sorry about your misfortune. Tight lines

I have always known that algae infested pond as the CC ponds.

Ah, Google Earth threw me off. They call it Beaver Dam.

It's good to know what that it's known by other names though. I've seen Bench's Pond on the stocking list.

I caught my first albino there, this year.

Got to wonder about you teenagers throwing caution to the wind and driving on the muddy dirt roads![Wink]

[cool][#0000ff]Gotta admit that thinking we are invincible is a trait we share with the younger generation. The difference is that kids don't know better and us old fudds have just forgotten to be careful.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]It's the old story..."WELL...IT LOOKED SOLID." And, I have negotiated worse situations with 4X4...when it was working. The wrong time to find out your equipment is not working is when you need it.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]We were happy to see our tax dollars at work on the local waters...and were most appreciative of the courtesy and helpfulness they provided. Only problem was that when I told the DWR guy I was connected to BFT (after we were back up on the road) he almost pushed me back down the hill. Gotta be careful to whom you admit a BFT affiliation. Could be detrimental.[/#0000ff]

I didnt know we are considered outlaws to the DWR? Good to know I guess.

And if its 4 wheel drive you need let me know. I can handle that with the greatest of ease.

[quote ratstar]I didnt know we are considered outlaws to the DWR? Good to know I guess. .[/quote]

[cool][#0000ff]Actually, I think we have a pretty good relationship with DWR...overall. There are some threads on the board that are uncomplimentary to DWR, but for the most part we support them, and many of us have assisted them in their Youth Fishing Program or in conducting on-the-water surveys, etc. There are more than a few DWR officers and biologists who regularly monitor our website to keep a finger on the pulse of what angler perceptions and reactions might be. And, some are actually registered members and often contribute useful information to fellow members.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I was kinda joking...making reference to the fact that we DO take a lot of potshots at them. However, most of the officers and biologists are sympathetic to our complaints and would like to be able to do more. The "bottleneck" on most problems is higher up than with the field people. And, while the RAC process is a good way to voice our opinions and work toward getting changes made, it takes a long time to see those changes under the current process. Fishermen are supposed to be patient, but the RAC process can try that patience.[/#0000ff]

Yep they are right its the CC pond a few years ago it went dry when the coal mines broke through and drained it...
[signature]
[cool][#0000ff]Are you sure you are not confusing that little pond with Electric Lake? That was a longtime problem with E-Lake and is still not completely corrected. But, they have made a lot of repairs and the lake is holding more water now.[/#0000ff]
[signature]
I'm sure the mine had to shut off that part of the mine...
[signature]
lol hey bassrods you are off the mark just a little there dude..[:p][sly]
it was E-lake the mine put a the hole in. it was skyline mine.. i got some buddys that work in the mine they said the mine put somthing like 200,000,000 ton's of grout in the shaft to plug the shaft. but the DWR say that they found a spring that has 5500 cfm on the other side of the mounton that they are pumping water back in to keep it up.. and the bubble up there is going strong all year.. so how ever it's being done E-lake is staying mostley up year around now..

cc pond has never went dry in the last 40 years. that i know of. there is no way to drain it.. and with a adv. deepth of 3 feet deep i dont think it would take much to drain it .. [crazy]

it's mostley a handycaped pond with lot's of planter pet's in it that winter kill hard evey year..

good try tho..
[signature]
I know it was dry all one winter two years ago I think, and was told by the USGS that a mine had drained it..But no mater what, it was dry and now has water in it...
