I hope you'll forgive the ignorance of this post, but I'd like to correct the fact that I've never fished in Idaho, and I am not even slightly familiar with where to go. [blush]

I will be taking a weekend trip to the north end of the valley in Mallad this winter and wonder if any of you could be so kind as to tell me where there is good ice fishing near there. Let's say withing a half hour drive, give or take, unless there is a location that's a lot better a tad further. (I was told by a non fisherman that Deep Creek, Daniels Reservoir are close. Yes? No?)

Good general fishing spots (GPS coordinates), likely catch, and lures, etc, would be MUCH appreciated!! One other thing, I'll be with my sons, who are WAY more interested in quantity, than they are trophy lunker hunters.

THANKS in advance!!! [Smile]

(PS: If I can be so bold to ask this also, my bro in-law owns a bunch of property there that he's making into a falconer's hunting location, and he's digging some {1/4 acre} ponds to attract ducks. He thought it would be an interesting idea to plant some fish in them for the kids to catch in summer. Forwarding contact info on the viability of this idea would be most wonderful.)

"Tight lines" everyone! and "c'mon ice!" [Wink]

For the life of me I can't remember the name of it but there is a reservoir on the east side of I-15 just north of the Idaho/Utah line. I have heard good reports from there in years past and have seen many fishermen on it but never fished it myself. perhaps others on the forum can expand on this and other waters.

PS: Please forgive misspelling [pirate] No offense intended. I swear I'd seen two "L's before somewhere... My bad...

I thought to Google Earth the two locations I mentioned. Are the smaller bodies of water near there worth exploring?

Thanks again

I think you're talking about Devil's Creek Reservoir.

It looks like Devil's Creek is right off the I-15. Maybe that's the one you mean. Daniel's looks farther on a winding road, so Devil's and Deep are looking like good options. The other water I see is right near Malad proper. Heck, I pulled a 20" brown out of something smaller than that just last week, so I don't want to overlook it! [Smile]

Hopefully, I'll hear from someone on threads on these locations, now that I know what their called! [Smile]

Roghet,

Devil Creek (10 miles from Malad) is the bomb for kids; a first timer knowing very little about fishing could ice fish at Devil. Jigs (green or pink) tipped with crawler or mealy will do you well, powerbait is good, but they will swallow it. Dead polling it off the bottom often works the best. If you have a vexilar you can sometimes find suspended fish and they hit hard.

Deep Creek Res. (8 mles from Malad) up Weston Canyon is my favorite and produces larger fish up to 20' Go early morning or at dusk to have fast action using the above mentioned methods.

Weston Res (12 miles from Malad) perch and big trout catch rates can be low.

Crowthers? is right near town, but I have little experience at this body of water.

If you have time and two seperate days I would try Devil and Deep. I bet you will have a fantastic experience

When does Devil's Creek or Deep Creek usually freeze over???

Thanks,

They are both in cold little depressions relating to topography; they usually are fishable by mid-December. My wife is travelling to Salt Lake on the 13th and I am going to have her check the ice, if no one has posted by then I will shout out another update. With the warmth of December 1st who knows for sure?

Devils Creek it is. Thanks for straightening me out. I also frequently hear good reports from Daniels but again have never fished it myself.

I'll tell you about every piece of fishable water with in 30 miles of Malad if you go back down a couple of threads and take the Bear river survey.

Daniels is single barbless flies and lures only. I've been there twice and it was slow. Hawkins resevoir is also in the area. I like Deep Creek best.

Absolutly not daniels is by far one of the best trophy trout lakes in that area and its only fifteen twenty minuts out of malad just up malad canyon. yea its artificial lure only no scents pinched barbes, no live bates one pole only but up there who cares it just move until you find the fish and trust me you will catch 17 to 22, 23 inchers for the first few hours I am talking twenty to thirty plus in the morning until about eleven or so. excuse all the spelling all i cared about in school was fishing not spelling.
