Saturday, 12/06/08- Hit the water early (5:00am).

Dragged an AC Plug around Boulder Cove in the dark, from the ramp to where the NPS boats are docked, back and forth. Air temp in the 40's, water temp about 63, no wind. Was not alone long, soon the area was full of boats, anglers casting and trolling. When the sun began to rise an eerie mist formed in the cove, almost like fog. Action was sloooow, soon boats started leaving. After a couple of hours I headed for Boulder Beach and trolled rattle-traps. Nothing. Thats it...nothing to show but a couple pictures of a misty morning on Lake Mead. I'm going cut bait next time.

A little dead out there, huh? I like the misty pictures though...

Ya know, a couple months back, Alex and I were fishing the Boulder Harbor cove from the kayaks, and some NDOW lady started screaming at us from the fishing pier that we weren't allowed to fish inside the harbor cove. We didn't know she was NDOW, and kept fishing, and she ended up getting in a boat and coming up to us and telling us we couldn't be in there. She said we could fish anywhere from the shore, but that we could not be in our boats.

Before that incident, we had fished inside the cove NUMEROUS times, with NDOW boats cruising right by us, and saying nothing. And since, I have seen NUMEROUS boats fishing inside the harbor with no repercussions. That leads me to ask... (1)Why did we get the shaft, and (2) Does anybody know if there has been a specific law enabling or disabling fishing inside the harbor since the marina was removed?

What really pissed me off, is that she went to the extent to get a boat to come tell us to get the hell out, but she never even asked for my fishing license! Too many people get away without a license. I think it should be enforced a bit more.

Anyway, my rant is over....Now to post my late report from Monday...

WOW! I hate it when people yell at me.

I don't see why fishing in Boulder Cove from a boat would be illegal. The bouys indicate rocks & reefs, no wake, and no boat areas. Haven't seen any signs prohibiting fishing. Maybe because there is a boat ramp close by?

The first picture posted is of several guides fishing in Boulder Cove. Those guys follow the rules. Don't think they would be there if it was not legal.

I was floating (along with several other boats and a pontoon inflatable) right next to the NO BOATS bouy, tossing a big lure right in the direction of the fishing dock for over an hour and nobody bothered anyone. Maybe you got a raw deal,or maybe not. Be nice to know.

Too bad about the slow action baysport, but as always I enjoyed your pictures!

Whizzle I read in the paper that the area the marina used to be located is closed to boats. The rule has been overturned and it’s slated to open to boats soon, once the rule or law or whatever is changed officially on the books, they say, "The public will be notified". I believe they said it will be a matter of a few weeks to a month. So seeing as the rule makes no sense anymore with the marina being gone and the rule having been overturned, I could see some of the "cooler" wardens looking the other way. Clearly she was not cool. I second the license rant, I think I have been checked twice in I don’t know, 1000 trips. And some of the cats I have seen fishing, I would bet my life they don’t have license.

Oh well, I know NDOW tries hard, and lord knows they are underfunded. Still it irks me to shell out cash to be all legal and support the resources with my fees, and I know many do not and have no fear of being sited. She started up that boat to ride out to you guys and then does not even ask to see your papers, silly...

Just got off the phone with NDOW (702 486-5127). Was informed that it is now legal to fish from a boat in Boulder Harbor. Was also told to do the following:
*Never fish in the entrance to the lake.
*Maintain the right-of-way of boat traffic from launch ramp to lake entrance.
*Maintain a flat wake.
*Stay out of No Boat areas.
*Nav lights must stay on until sunrise, not first light.

Ahhh good to see they moved faster in opening the area than they had predicted in the local paper... Our tax and license fee's at work.

Wonderful info guys... Nice to know I can go back there again. I was a little timid about going back after that incident.

[cool]Hey Whizzle, I asked one of the creel clerks for NDOW on 12/3 about fishing in Boulder Harbor. She said it was legal from a floattube as long as I didn't fish within 200ft. of the launch ramp and to stay out from the NO BOATS bouys. I fished 12/3 and 12/5 in the harbor with limited success. Even had a NDOW officer go past in his boat. He waved and went to his dock.

Went fishing 10 times the past couple months near the harbor and been checked 2 times and seen them checking others 2 other time so they are working hard and regularly checking people. But I've seen waste as they have 3 lanes with NDOW employees sitting there collecting entrance fees to the Mead Rec. area and no cars... not very efficient, not underfunded. Waste of my tax money. Anyhows fishing is off and on depending on the day.

Welcome to the board! Look forward to your future posts.

Last December my pard, Don and I was shoving off the dock at about 4:30am. on a dark cold morning. A truck pulls up and flashes its lights at us. A man runs down the dock and demands that we return to the dock at once. I ask "Who the heck are you?". "Fish and game" was the reply. We return to the dock and he was indeed a NDOW game warden. We then got to go through the dance.......you know, fishing license, the entire safety check, etc.,etc. Took about 15 minutes. This guy checked everything, and was not very friendly. I knew I would pass, but I was nervous.

Couple weeks later, we were fishing at anchor in the Sand Island area and we got to dance again. Young guy this time, very friendly.

Week after that, returning to the ramp, got to dance again. Afterwards I wondered if I had done something wrong and had a target on my back, or maybe someone in a boat that looks like mine had. Naw, just coincidence, have not been checked since. But I was concerned for awhile!

I wish that after a successful inspection they would give you a "get out of jail free" card or something to show that you are a good guy and don't need to be bothered again for a while! [crazy] This might free them up to check shore fisherman and guys in kayaks & floattubes. You know, anyone who isn't in a white console boat with BAYSPORT on the side of it! [Wink]
