The alarm went off at 4 this am, I peeked outside and no new snow. I decided to try to find my way to Causey res. I have never been there before. It started snowing lightly as I hit Ogden but didn't start sticking until around Pineview.
I finally found myself at my destination around 6:30. I was the first one there. Having never fished Causey before I drove around as it got lighter in hopes of running into someone friendly enough to show me the ropes at this local. As it brightened up, it looked to me like the safest ice would be in the arm you reach by crossing the dam.
1 foot went through right on the edge but the next step felt solid. About 10' out the ice was 4" thick. I got my sled. I went out farther, 3" farther still I began to hear cracking, only 2" I set up where the ice was 2.5" in 20' of water.
1st taker was a 10" brown, then nothing for a while then a mix of small tigers and 'bows and a few splake.
It snowed pretty steady and soon I was standing in 3" of water on top of the ice, SPOOKY. I moved closer to shore and continued fishing for a while in shallower water with fair success. it was never hot until I was packing up to leave when I hit a double!
All in all a great 1st trip to a beautiful place!

Has anyone else ever fantasized about a chair lift back up the steep sides of that res.? I definitely pack too much crap!

2 more things, 1) I have not ever caught a koke before and wondered if anyone could tell me if the silver/copper fish pictured might be one? b) What do you think of my rubberised floor pieces? I was thinking the fish that you release may benefit from not resting on the ice? plus it helps keep the knees dry.

Thanks! KF

[#000000]I don't think the fish you have in the first picture is that of a kokanee. It is a small rainbow trout. I can't see this rubber piece you mention either. I don't think it would help the fish lose less scales or slime. [/#000000]

Thanks, you are right about the 'bow, it sure was a pretty fish anyhow, bright copper and silver with very few spots. I hope someone will post a picture of a koke for me.

Also, the fish pictured are all on top of the mat. There was some discussion last year about a fishes slime coat freezing if it was on the ice too long. On a cold day imagine sticking your Tongue to the ice. I thought this mat may help.

Here are some kokes.

The kokes are silver with an almost black top side. The mouths are generally very soft, and the scales come off all over the place.

One sure give away is the tail, definately trout. Kokanee have a deep fork, check out the pictures. Also it has been my experience that when you get in to the Kokes at Causey...you really get into them. some times it so fast and furious your looking at multiple rats nests on the ice and nothing in the water.LOL any ways good on ya, glad you didn't go through...
