The Future Fisherman Foundation is now accepting grant applications for its 2009-10 Physh Ed program. The program offers public, private and charter school teachers the chance to apply for $2,500 grants that will support fishing and/or boating activities in their school's physical education programs. Applications must be submitted electronically to peapp@asafishing.org by Monday January 19, 2009, at 5 p.m.
Previous Physh Ed grant winners can also apply for $500 in supplemental funds to continue incorporating fishing and boating activities in their physical education programs.
"Fishing is a gateway activity to encourage a child's interest in nature," said Doug Darr, Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Aquatic Education Coordinator. "Connecting students with Alabama's aquatic resources is not only a fun learning experience for the students, but it also helps ensure the sustainability of those resources."
The grant money can be used for equipment, field trips, and curriculum materials to assist instructors in carrying out fishing, boating and conservation education. Grant recipients will also receive a week of training in fishing and boating techniques. The training will take place July 2009 in Traverse City, Mich.
Three Alabama schools received Physh Ed grants last year: Newton Elementary School (Newton, Ala.), Hankins Middle School (Theodore, Ala.), andLyman Ward Military Academy (Camp Hill, Ala.).
Physical education teachers interested in ADCNR fishing or casting programs outside of the Physh Ed program can contact Mr. Darr directly at (334) 242-3884. More information is also available through any of the Alabama Wildlife and Fresh Waters Fisheries Division's district offices.
