Because of my schedual at home, I have a feeling I am going to have to do my ice fishing at night this year or very early in the morning starting at about 3 am or so. Has any one had luck through the ice at night? What about using under water light, does that help?

I've heard of people doing very well fishing at night.. I guess it depends what fish you target..

I will most likley not be making to F.G. for burbot any time soon. so I am still looking at panfish, trout, and bass.

I also have a tough schedule since I work graveyards. I have been thinking about making some night trips myself. Trout can be caught at night, I've caught both tiger trout and rainbows in the dark on the ice using glow jigs, nice fish too. I would also like to try hitting some crappie at Pineview, since they are notorious night feeders. Walleye too. I'd recommend trying that. I don't know much about night fishing bass. Although I just read an In-Fisherman article about ice fishing for Smallies, so it can be done. However, I think they pretty much shut it down at night.

Catfish77 and I fished pineview last year at night. It was very intense, action packed. Caught lots of very good sized crappie. We had insane activity. We found that glow jigs seemed to deture them. After that we fished regular jigs (no light, no glow) and it worked perfectly.

I fished Strawberry last night. Started at 9:30 and left at 3:15. I've fished several times over the years at strawberry and deer creek. My experience is that it is no better. Last night we caught 8 total. The light seemed to attract them. When the light was off, we had no luck or even saw a fish on the vex. Turned the light back on and we started seeing them again. They weren't hungry and the bite was so light that you could not detect them without a wire on the end of the pole. We caught cutts that ranged from 15 inches to 20 inches. Most were caught from 12:30 am to 3 am. Strawberry is usually a morning lake which shuts down around 11 am. Anywho, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

What kind of light did you use?

Usually I use a gas lantern. Last night we were going to use a white LED lantern but the batteries were dead so we used a flash light. I set it up in the middle of the tent facing down and it gave us enough light to fish ...barely.

15 or so years ago, I fished Strawberry a lot. We did all nighters at least half a dozen times a year. 3" red body and white tail, curly tail jigs did really good. The bite was always unpredictable, but there was always a fast and furious hour or two sometime during the night.
I built a tent light out of an old car tail light. Take off the red lens and throw it away. Line the inside with aluminum foil for more reflection. Then rig up three wires about ten feet long with female blade connectors on one end to hook up to the light. That way you have high beam and low beam, just switch a wire. The light, wire, and a fish finder battery all fit in a plastic ammo can that can be closed up tight. And you can use the battery for your fish finder. It will run the light on low beam and the fish finder all night. And you can rig up the optional cigarette lighter in the side of the case for cell phone charging or whatever. I still use that same setup if I'm out at night.

I use to fish Holmes Creek Res. alot at night in a shelter. Caught some big crappie, nice gills, some big large mouth and even several walleye, but that was back in the good ol'days when no one else fished it. The bite would usually die off just after dark but would pick up again an hr. or so later. Sure miss that old fishing hole.[:/]
