I know I am not the only one that is tired of buying jigheads that have paint in the little hole your line goes through. I wish the manufacturers would not paint that part. But they do. So I try to buy the ones that don't have the paint in them in the first place.

But If there is paint there, then what is the best method of removing it? Is there some king of tool? I usually try to use a hook from another lure or a thick safety pin, but then I also end up hooking myself half of the time.

There must be some stupidly simple solution to this problem. Somebody please enlighten me.

Thanks

clippers that fly guys use, clipper on one end and poker on the other for the eyelets. works on anything that is painted or varnished like jigs or flies.

Thanks TubeDude!!

I knew there had to be something out there.
I had a heck of a time trying to remove the paint from my new jigs last night.
But now I know!

[cool][#0000ff]The basic problem is that most commercially sold jig heads are painted using the powder paints...heating the heads, dipping them in the powder and then reheating them to cure the paint. That results in a high percentage of the heads having the eyes filled with the paint. Bummer.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I pour and paint all of my own jigheads, but still I get sloppy with the brush once in awhile and end up with "an eyefull". I keep those little tools handy both on my work desk and in my tube for cleaning out the ones I mess up.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Just a note. Using another hook (or knifepoint) to clean out the eyes is potentially dangerous. I know a couple of guys who have applied a bit of uncontrolled pressure and ended up with a hook point in a finger or knuckle...past the barb. Ouchie. It also does not do much for the sharpness of the hook you use to poke out the paint.[/#0000ff]

That tool is great. I had one a long time ago but lost it. I find that I am pretty excited when I buy new ice fishing jigs so I dont mind picking them out and getting ready to fish. What I do is get another jig that is real sharp and put it right in the middle of the eye. I push it in a little bit, straight in and then turn the jig to either side. It does a great job of geting that layer off.
