I had a DNR biologist stop by at Pineview yesterday and ask a few questions. One of them was this same question. I leaned toward quality over quantity. I hate cleaning small perch and crappies. I would rather clean 10 big perch or crappies than 40 small ones. What does everyone else think?
Also, i had a good talk about replacements for pineview gators. We will see what happens with that.[cool]

Quality, hate clening little ones too

Quality gets my vote. I usually turn small perchskies into bait strips...

That's really a tough question. If I am fishing by myself or with the guys I woul rather have bigger fish, but if I am taking out my kids, then I just want fast action, so in the case I would rathe have more but smaller fish. The fast action holds their attention better.

Most of the time I will go with quality. That said, I am not so devoted to catching a large fish that I am interested in spending many trips getting totally skunked searching for the one trophy fish. I also like bodies of water where I can take the kids or newbies to fishing and I know that I can get them into fish, even though they may not be considered "quality" fish. I get frustrated with the angler who feels that all bodies of water should be quality or the flip side, the angler who feels that all bodies of water should be quantity.

Hey, I don't know what is the matter with you guys. I want both - lots of big fish. LOL

Quality! I get more excited bringing home a big one than a bunch of small ones.

I would agree with jplacquay. My kids love the fast action regardless of the size, but if I am with my wife or with friends quality is sweet[

I vote for both, you can have it both ways, look at the Berry you have fish under the slot and fish over the slot...
If you don't like to clean small fish (don't keep then) if you want bigger fish let the small ones grow to big ones...
But you can't keep any big ones on a heavy fished lake or smaller lakes or you won't have any to catch....

Personally a mixture of both quality and quantities of fish like at the berry. But if i had to pick one quality and if my son or wife tags along quantities .

You can't always release small fish.
Perch and other pan fish that are in deep water will die when brought to the surface.
Back to the question.
I would love to only catch large fish,
[quality] but that isn't reality.
Sometimes we need to catch and keep smaller fish in order for others to get larger.
The Ogden River is a good example of this.
I guess the answer for me is both.

I think I'd rather see both small and large pulled out cause it shows the lake habitat is doing well. But bigger is ALWAYS better.

I just want to lay waste to a better grade of fish.

I don't keep the small fish Cliff. Your point has been brought up SEVERAL times. Also, when i do it is because they won't go back down the hole. about 10 of the fish i caught yesterday were too small to keep but they would not descend. Was i supposed to leave them in the hole or on the ice??
P.S. I was not talking about the berry, i was leaning toward panfish for this poll.[

What kind of small fish are you catching in the Ogden river????
If you know that most of the pan fish are small use a barbless hook and as soon as you see the size of the fish in the water you can give it slack line or pull it throw the hole...Or fish in the depth of water less then 15' so you can release them by hand...
[signature]
I know that all fish can not be released safely and some are used for bait..
But some fisherman will keep every fish they catch know mater how big...
Can some of the pan fish be used for Burbot at the Gorge????What kink of fish for bait be used??

In the lakes around Moab the fish we catch are mostly planted bows and cutts around 8" to 10". There are a few browns, these seem to be the larger of the three 12" to 16" . I usually release all of the fish that I catch, and have taught the kids and grand kids to release as well. So I guess that I just want to catch fish!!!
OBTW , Nice mug shot in the SLTrib Brody, congrats!!!

I like the idea of a quality fishery. That being said I like catching strong fighters...thats why I pass right by the Berry and go to the Gorge or Starvation. I love the Berry for newbies or children, fast action and nice fish. So I guess we need a mix of both.

The Ogdne River is full of stunted Brown Trout.
As for fishing for panfish,
You won't catch very many Perch at Pineview or Rockport in 15' of water!
As you should know, they like deeper, warmer water and are usually found in depths of over 40'.
Why would an ethical angler choose to use a barbless hook and try to get a small Perch to come off the hook before pulling it through the ice hole.
That fish will die!
I don't see any wisdom in killing fish by releasing them from water deeper than 30', only to have them die under the ice.
You can do it if it makes you happy but I will stay within the law.
