[Image: happy.gif][#008000]Care to give a guess as to the species of this trout? Scanned this from a calendar that was given to me last year.[/#008000]

Hmmmmmm? With all those colors my first guess would be that it's a char, rather than a trout. But then there's that medial line.

And a question: Is the tail scalped in the pix? Or is it squared off for real, as it would be with a brookie?

Maybe a male dolly varden in spawning colors?

Maybe this shows my ignorance, but it looks a whole lot like a Brook trout. Then again, it is missing the white tips on the fins...

[#008000][Image: happy.gif]The lower fins do have a white leading edge, but unfortunately some of the color was washed away during scanning. The picture is a bit longer than my scanner thus either the tail or the snout gets cut off.[/#008000]

I said dolly varden, I did, I did. What do I win?

My initial guess on this one would have been that it's a parr. Given the tail shape I'd have said a brown trout parr.

But perhaps it's a salmon trout?

[#008000][Image: happy.gif]Oh come on now Brook- did your professors in school permit writing down two answers? You can't have a multiple answer response. Oh okay you win a free trip to Patagonia with all expenses paid. See my accountant MacFly as he is responsible for issuing the voucher. LOL[/#008000]

since he gave multiple answers.. which one is right?? .. his prize will be dependent on whether it is the first, second, or third answer.. [Smile]

I guess issuing my Patagonia voucher has Confused you, Mac. I only offered two choices, not three. [cool]

Reason is, from the picture, it's hard to tell whether that's a baby or a mature fish. If a baby, then it's carrying parr marks. If an adult, the number of possibilities becomes more limited.

It's funny, too, how pictures of fish can affect things. I remember back in the 80s, when, in one year, the Michigan state record brown trout was broken twice. As it turns out, in both cases the fish were Atlantic salmon (Michigan had an aborted project to stock the Big Pond with Atlantics), and it was fishermen, seeing the photos, who identified them correctly.

Apparently, even Michigan's own fish biologists didn't recognize the Atlantics when they saw them---one of the reasons the project was dropped.

okay.. since I was Confused I did a little more checking on line.. and from what I can see from this sites [url "http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.fishingnet.com/jpgimages/general/parrr.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.fishingnet.com/parr_recognition.htm&usg=__Sn-tWuiogQEVYIpDikNp4jGWhXU=&h=200&w=300&sz=16&hl=en&start=2&um=1&tbnid=x__2xGTJgLnUSM:&tbnh=77&tbnw=116&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dbrown%2Btrout%2Bparr%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN"]parr chart .. this looks to be a salmon parr.. and I can also see why there was or could be misidentifications on these fish as you mentioned happened in Michigan.. [crazy]

[#008000][Image: happy.gif]Sorry no MacFly it is not a golden. Think more about the SW region of the country.[/#008000]

im gonna guess a red band trout not sure what sub species but that is my guess
[signature]
Mac, I think a salmon parr would have a much more indented tail.

No question in my mind the picture is of something in the trout family.
[signature]
[#008000][Image: happy.gif]Oh yes it is in the trout family. In fact it might even understand Spanish too.[/#008000]

I thought Gila when he first mentioned the southwest, Chrome Junky. But to the best of my knowledge, the Gila doesn't have parr marks. At least not in the adult stage.

Plus purebred Gila's are extremely rare, because they readily cross with rainbows.

I got a feeling DryRod is gonna stump us all with this one. And then when he reveals the answer we'll all say, "oh, yeah!"
