I'm going to get serious about ice fishing and get a power auger finally. Does anybody have any advice on which one to get, or what is a good brand or anything (or have a good one they want to sell me [Wink])?

I have a Jiffy White Lightening that I have used for several years. It's been a great auger. The key is maintenence...make sure you drain the gas tank after each season and replace the spark plug every year. You should also post your question on the Utah board for additional feedback.

I bought the Eskimo Stingray at Sportmans last year and have been very pleased with it. It was the least expensive I could find at around 250.00.

[indent]I posted the same question two years ago and was amazed at the bias towards a StrikeMaster Mag. Because of great reviews I ended up buying it. I've had to replace it once because I broke the handle(plastic) while drilling a hole. It has taken some getting used to, but other than the handle issue, it has been a good auger. Engine works great and the blades are awesome.

The reason why they put a plastic handle on it is for weight purposes to make it lighter.

I'm on my second season with the Eskimo 10" Mako and I'm happy with it. Starts good in all conditions once I learned the sequence. Sportsmans warehouse carries them. When I broke it out this winter it had a leak in the gas tank and after faxing a copy of the sales receipt they have sent me a new tank no questions asked (good customer service). If I had filled out the warrenty card I wouldn't of even had to fax the receipt. (lesson learned). It's pretty loud compaired to some of the others I've heard.

I have a strike lite made by strike master. It is very light at 20 pounds and runs on straight unleaded. It is very quiet and clean running. It cuts holes very fast and has definitely lived up to the hype. The only issue is the price tag $525 but like you said if your gonna get serious about it do it right.

If you have the money the strike lite or lazer mag are awesome. I bought the mako but broke the cheap plastic throttle handle the other day.

This is my second ice auger. My first lasted about 10 years before I seized a piston.

If I could look at one thing I would get one that has a strong throttle handle that is the part that I have had the most problems with.

I have the Eskimo Mako 8" and have never had a problem with it. It starts on the first pull every time regardless of how cold it gets.

I would also recomend the Nils master Ice augers. I don't have any experience with the powered ones but based on how quickly the hand ones cut through the ice I would be truly impressed to see how a powered one goes through. I know that they also come with a detachable handle so that if the motor doesn't work you can still take the motor off and do it by hand.
