My brother, my son and myself went to East Canyon and started at the long skinny arm on the West side. We had slow but occasional action there and then move to the state park side later in the day. We only caught four total but missed a lot of hits. They seem to just mouth the bait ( ice flies with wax worms). I caught a couple of nice fat rainbows and when I cleaned them they were full of some kind of baitfish that had the shape of a small panfish not long and slender like a minnow but more round. Does anyone know what kind of baaitfish is in East Canyon? Anyway we had a great day and saw three Bald Eagles, a cow elk a few mule deer including two bucks and a large cow moose. We took the dirt (snow) road from Jeremy Ranch to get there. I hope everyone had a great weekend, the burbot bash sure looked like fun. John R.

Hi John,
Thanks for the report! I can't wait for the ice to come off so I can get my boat in there and start slaying the rainbows again. The small baitfish that you're referring to that you found in their stomachs might be smallmouth bass. Those rainbows will chow down on the little smallies with gusto! Take care, Fred K.

[cool][#0000ff]The forage fish are baby crappies. The trout really hit them hard every year and jigging with a silver Kastmaster can work well.[/#0000ff]

I saw those little crappies in there stomachs too.
But, I had one with a stomach full of deer hair! I am not kidding. Not a little, but a LOT of deer hair. I pulled a 8" "tube" of deer hair out of one 'bow. I didn't see any worms or anything mixed in either.
I guess he was hungry for hair.

I was unaware that the Jeremy Ranch Road was open after the snow started. Is this road passable with 4WD through the winter? Is it plowed or just packed from traffic?
Thank You

Trout are remarkably taste insensitive or sometimes highly sensitive. It depends. One stomach analysis I performed revealed the following contents: green algae clump, a piece of driftwood, a piece of waterlogged tree bark, two pebbles, and daphnia.....finally one digestible item. This rainbow was at Rockport.
Jeremy road is open ! That just made my day, will be going soon. Thanks for the report.

The road from Jeremy actually was quite good and you could make it with an all wheel drive car let alone a four wheel drive truck. I saw a few subarus on that road and they seemed to have no trouble. It looked like they had plowed it all the way though and it is a nice shortcut. John R
