Anyone predicting the steelhead success this year? I was somewhat disappointed last year and was debating the trip to Shoupe this year. Any info would be appreciated.

I didn't find the fishing to be all that poor last fall, I do think the fish were a little late. I would definately not cancel a trip to the river because of slow fishing. There were estimated to be 20% more fish coming up the Salmon this year, and that means all you have to do is be in the right place at the right time and things could be red hot. I did find the fish to be very spotty in the fall, I would catch one here and one there, with two and three fish days. Nothing was very hot for me either, maybe we can get lucky this spring. Good luck down there, if you decide to go.

Definetly like the fall VS the spring.

The Challis area has alwas been good to me in March. Like to fish just above the confluence of the Pasimerohi and just below to the narrows. Some times combat fishing but I have always done well.
A line in the water is worth two in a bush.

In my opinion it all depends on how quickly it warms up. If It warms up slow, then the fishing around shoup is pretty good. Dead water plays a lot into this also. it takes 1-2 weeks after deadwater breaks up before fishing downriver picks back up. If you catch it before it gets too muddy, then you should have a good time. If not, I have found that it is better to fish upstream of north fork. Last spring I done pretty good. I actually fished below owl creek during the middle of April. As was said on this thread, You have to be in the right place at the right time. We hit one hole last spring and caught 9 fish in 45 minutes (unheard of with my luck). The biggest was a 33" wild male which I gladly turned loose(if interested, there is a picture on my profile of this one). Some days are better than others. Welcome to the board. It is nice finding a few more people on here that are into steelhead fishing. Hopefully there will be more conversations on this subject.

Those are all great points for a guy trying to decide on one trip this spring. Just somemore info; we did so-so all last spring, earlier we fished close to shoup and worked our way up to sunbeam. The best fishing we found was the last week in April around Ellis, beleive it or not. Sometimes to fish are just slow getting there I guess. I will spend my entire life trying to figure those things out. By the way the fish under my screen name was caught on the Flume Hole in early March.
