Hey, I have never really been ice fishing and want to know a few things about it before I head out. I live in Rexburg and want to try Ririe.

First, do I need some kind of drill to make a hole or would I be able to just find an old hole?

Second, what kind of bait should I be using? It would be fun to catch some Kokes, as I have never caught one. Is there different baits for different fish?

Third, is there anything else that I need to know before I go?

Any help would be great! Thanks!

i recomend for your first time going with somebody who knows what they are doing other wise your first trip might turn into your only trip.

Ririe just froze so there may or may not be old holes around. In cold weather the old holes freeze over fast so you need a chipper bar to break the ice out. If you go on a Sat. there will probably be old holes around. to use. The thing is the popular spots are not necessarily the best spots.

Your regular rods will work for ice fishing, but you need some type of strike indicator like a spring bobber because the winter bite is much lighter than during the summer.

It depends what type of fish you are after. For Kokes I would use small pink jigs like a pink swedish pimple. For perch I use a swedish pimple to get it to the bottom with a very small ice fly for a dropper like a ratfinkie. For trout I use paddle bugs in white, pink, chartruse.

I think I would go out on a Sat. when there are a lot of people out there fishing and just observe what they are doing and ask questions. Most people are willing to help and teach new ice fishers.

Towards the end of the ice season you can usually pick up a hand auger really cheap.

I am no expert at ice fishing but if you want to go sometime when I am planning to go you can join me and use my hand auger. If Windriver is going at the same time he has a power auger and all the toys.

We have been wanting to try Ririe too. You are welcome to join us. I doubt I will get out next weekend due to work, but the following weekend looks promising.

That sounds good to me. I will probably need to go with one of you because I don't really know anybody that knows anything about ice fishing. Let me know when you anybody is planning on going and I will plan on it as well.

Like was said, most the old holes are ready to be re-drilled. But anything from the same day you should be able to break it out. I would at least invest in an ice ladle/scoop. About $2-4 at wallyworld or sportsmans. For bait/lures I usually use a 1/8 oz or 1/4oz kast master in gold or silver for and tip it with a meal worm. Have also used gold crocodile spoons. But then jigs have worked as well. Basically pick something. The one other thing that I found today was well worth the fairly small cost was a pair of yaktrax. I was sliding around like crazy until I put them on then was stable as could be. If I know I'm headed to Ririe a day or so in advance in the next while I'll send a PM as well.
