The CCC often provides "boots on the ground" for much of the needed restoration work for fish and watersheds in the state, at a minimal cost. This cut would be shortsighted and even dangerous. [/#008000]
[#008000]That's why we need you to [/#008000][#ff0000]ACT NOW![/#ff0000][#008000] The budget deadline is fast approaching and we need your emails no later than Monday, February 2nd. [/#008000]
[#008000]The Governor claims the closure will result in a net savings of $17 million to taxpayers. However, an examination of the numbers proves that the CCC actually saves the State millions of dollars each year. [/#008000]
[#008000]And the closure will destroy the oldest and most respected corps in the world – we can’t let that happen![/#008000]
[#008000]The Save-the-CCC Committee is a growing group of concerned individuals and organizations that feel strongly about the great contribution that the CCC makes to California and its residents. Its partners are committed to advocating for a continued positive role for the CCC in California.[/#008000]
[#008000]The website [/#008000][#ff0000]www.save-the-ccc.org[/#ff0000][#008000] is designed to let you know how you can help. The Committee is requesting that letters be sent to the Governor and your state representative IMMEDIATELY to let them know how important the CCC is. [/#008000]
[#008000]Eliminating the CCC is a text book example of "penny-wise, pound-foolish". In 2008 alone, the CCC saved the State taxpayers $30.8 million in its work with other state agencies, including: CalFire, State Parks, CalTrans, and the Department of Water Resources – this alone is more than the State would save by eliminating the CCC.[/#008000]
[#008000]It would also weaken the state's emergency preparedness. Over the past ten years, the CCC has devoted over 2.8 million hours to emergency response activities.[/#008000]
[#008000]And the Corps contributions to California's wild fish and watersheds are critical. Since 1980, CCC corpsmembers have:[/#008000]
[#008000]o Improved over 1,500 stream miles
o Modified over 1,250 barriers to fish passage
o Stabilized over 48,880 feet of stream bank
o Installed more than 6,500 fish habitat structures
o Improved over 326,500 square feet of fisheries habitat
o Planted over 2,000,000 trees
[/#008000]
[#008000]In addition to this hands-on restoration effort, the CCC also provides services to the fisheries community through the AmeriCorps Watershed Stewards Project. AmeriCorps members are placed with natural resources professionals working for a variety of government and non-profit organizations, like CalTrout, throughout California. Since its creation in 1994, WSP members have:[/#008000]
[#008000]o Surveyed over 19,500 miles of streams and watersheds
o Developed over 1,100 restoration projects
o Provided 48,500 hours of instruction to elementary school students on salmonid ecology, watershed processes and best land-use practices
[/#008000]
[#008000]So, please [/#008000][#008000]contact[/#008000][#008000] your representatives and the Governor and let them know that this short-sighted budget fix is no fix at all and that the Civilian Conservation Corps is just too important to eliminate. [/#008000]
