Full Version: Perch...something I didn't know

Fished Rockport Sunday and caught a Perch that was stuffed with rainbow trout fry. One popping out of his mouth, another with the tail sticking out of it's throat! The fry were at least 1-1/2 inch long. Then the hungry bugger eats my worm on an ice fly.

I've caught perch when trolling for trout, so I know that they eat other fish, but was surprised at the size of fish they eat.

Also, this may be the reason that the Perch bite at the Rock isn't great. They have plenty of natural food to eat.

By the way, the Perch was only 8 inches long, so relatively speaking he was eating some pretty big meals compared to his size.

Learned something.

Perch will eat anything that they can put in their mouths. I have had them take pike lures bigger than they are at yuba. [:p]

Any piscavorus fish will be able to eat another fish up to 1/3 their own length, so a 1 1/2 inch fry is just a tasty morsel. A smooth skinned, soft rayed little rainbow is all the better..
