One fisherman died and about 125 had to be rescued off a slab of ice that broke free from the main in Western Lake Erie. The slab that broke off was about 8 miles wide. Here is a link.

It happens every so often back in that country on the Great Lakes, I use to drive all over lakes back home (Wis.) when I was younger but driving on the big lakes would scare me. My brother-in-law and several of his buddies had to get rescued by a Hover-Craft several years ago on Utah Lake when the ice they were fishing on near Lincoln Beach broke lose and started drifting North with the wind. They made the news that night with a happy ending.

I grew up in Michigan and driving the family car out on the ice was common. Back in the early 60s, I used to drive my 1955 Chevy sedan 7 miles off shore in Saginaw bay for perch. I did it several times and always with another vehicle or two. We always carried 2X12 planks to cross the pressure ridges and followed the line of small upright Christmas trees frozen into the ice as markers to and from the good fishing areas. The trees helped get there and back during white outs. We didn't have GPS back then. Ahhhh, the foolishness of youth![cool][/size][/#800000][/font]

The day began with fishermen setting down wooden pallets to create a bridge over a crack in the ice so they could roam farther out on the lake.
Ottawa County Sheriff Bob Bratton said. "What happened here today was just idiotic. I don't know how else to put it."

Hmmm, sounds familiar,

Yeah totally![Wink] EVERYONE puts a plank on to walk across the soft edge....lol. Or how about this? I put waders on and wade to climb out onto about 3 inches of ice which I know to be safe.....since it was rising water which created the new water ring around the "safe" ice. I think I'm a bit "idiotic."[Wink]

Looks like they should all invest in fanboats or amphibious ATVs. Man that would not be fun cause you'd have to stop fishing. Oh, and it's dangerous.

Stop Fishing!!!! I would be trolling, while waitng to be rescued....[Wink]

I did read they had to leave most of their gear out there, that would really suck!

yeah i saw it on the news there were like 50 buggies with sleds, shelters, and the works, all left behind on the chunk of ice.
