Saturday, 2/7, Dan, Dave & I headed out at 7:15 from the upper Soldier Creek parking lot. Within a half hour we were thankful no one was hurt.
Dan & I were on a snowmobile and Dave was on his ATV. At the mouth of the narrows on the North side (right shore heading in) we hit a spot that looked like wind blown ice, going about 50 mph. There was a small splash. However, by time we stopped and looked back, it was too late to wave off the ATV.
The next thing we saw was Dave doing summersaults across the ice. The ATV came to an abrupt stop as the right front tire broke through. Dave was OK but the ATV had some serious damage. Only the shock absorber was holding the tire in place. We used the winch cable and a ratchet strap to stabilize the wheel and limped it back to the parking lot. Some of you may have seen us towing the ATV up the hill. Not the most fun I've ever had!
Before heading back I dropped Dan off at our favorite spot, where he iced three fish by time we returned at 9:30. We each had 8 or 9 fish, very light bite on tube jigs with chub meat.
Also talked to a friend who hit the same area on Sunday. He said he saw the open water and that there is a pressure ridge forming in that general area.
Couple of pictures attached. Photos of Dan & Steve are from a previous trip.
Sorry, I guess the pictures didn't make it the first time.
