It may be a shock to some of us but not everyone wants to read every thread that is on our active forum. With that in mind, please take a moment and stop and ask yourself, "Does my subject communicate what my post is about?"

[#bf0000]Folks, please realize I am only talking about the "Subject" not what one types in the post and in replies. The Subject is what shows up before one opens the thread. [/#bf0000]

[#000080]Some sample subjects that probably could be improved:[/#000080]
[#000080][/#000080]
[#000080]Help[/#000080]
[#000080]What do you think?[/#000080]
[#000080]I'm ticked![/#000080]
[#000080]Jordanelle[/#000080]
[#000080]Strawberry[/#000080]

(If any of the above is an exact match to a subject you have used please do not take offense. I just grabbed whatever came to my mind without looking at any real posts.)

[#bf0000]Better subjects:[/#bf0000]
[#bf0000][/#bf0000]
[#bf0000]Help, I keep getting skunked[/#bf0000]
[#bf0000][/#bf0000]
[#bf0000]What do you think about vertical jigging compared to trolling to catch fish?[/#bf0000]
[#bf0000][/#bf0000]
[#bf0000]Fished Strawberry and got crowded out by other anglers[/#bf0000]
[#bf0000][/#bf0000]
[#bf0000]Any recent reports on Jordanelle?[/#bf0000]
[#bf0000][/#bf0000]
[#bf0000]Strawberry report 2/10/09[/#bf0000]

Also, if one is looking for information they are more likely to receive a reply if they use a subject that matches their request for information.

That said, we would rather you make a post using a subject that could be improved than not making a post at all.

Thanks for listening.

Now this comes from someone who in the past has told us about all of his problems with his vehicle last year while ice fising at Strawberry?[crazy]

Thanks for the compliment [Wink] I also thought I used a pretty good Subject on that thread:

I'm not meaning to be rude and I hope I haven't read it wrong!?????[unimpressed]
But now are we being told what we can say and write?
People have the choice not to read something if they don't want to ?
Or to go to another thread,
Most of what I see "is" talking about fishing,
If that is the case then why even be on the site,
Heck I can run a add in the news paper saying,
( Wanted Fisherman To With Please Call
123-4567 )
That is not something that we would want to do,
I personally thought that was what this site was for?

Nowhere am I trying to tell you or anyone else what you can say or write. I am only reminding people that the Subject (which should let one know what the thread is about before clicking on the thread) is there for a reason. That reason is to let fellow members know the general nature of the thread before one clicks on the thread. Also, I also said we would prefer that no one get so concerned about this request that they don't make posts. Also, please remember that not everyone is blessed to have a fast connection to the Internet and would prefer not to open a thread that is of no interest to them, but can't tell because of the words used in the Subject.

He's not trying to tell you what to say. Good grief. He's politely asking that when you post a thread be kind enough to say what it is about. If you have a question- kindly post a question in the subject box. Don't post "Yuba" in the subject box and then "has anyone been to Yuba". That way people that want to just read fishing reports don't have to open every new post. I think they should open a new section titled "fishing reports" and leave this general area for questions.

Kent,

You have over 7,000 posts, is it really wasting that much of your time...LOL [sly]

Not for me because I am encouraged to read all posts no matter what the subject matter is. You would be surprised how many times I have started a thread on BFT about a subject that I really didn't feel that strongly about (and sometimes even felt the opposite about); however, because I had received PMs from other members voicing their concerns I have been willing to make a post and take the heat for making it. I am willing to do that because I feel it goes with the territory of being a moderator. You may also notice that rarely do you see me taking sides on a controversial thread. I do this intentionally because I do not want members to feel that I am being biased in how I moderate certain subjects. Sometimes it becomes humorous because I get accused of taking sides when I have edited, deleted, or locked a thread when the person accuses me of having views that are opposite to my actual views. I would like to meet the moderator that takes more effort to be unbiased than I do. Please do not take what I have just written as seeking sympathy or praise -- I seek neither and I deserve neither -- just trying to do my job as I see it.

Your right in saying you can't say what you want. One of my posts was deleted. All I was doing was trying to make my point and express my thoughts.I also wanted to bring a Smile to some ones day.I though it was very much inline with the direction the post was going and the subject at hand.Someone pops off and you can't reply?HMM.I didn't threaten anyone or swear at anyone.Freedom of speech or something like that.
I very much understand your post title needs to match your post, but let a guy speak his mind. Please!!

Rapalas R rated G for everyone.

I've been wondering about my own posts... glad you confirmed it. I think all to often we get to feelin like we are chatting with old friends, take a shortcut and forget there are a host of others who may not know us or what our posts generally consist of.... I know I appreciate details in the subject line when I am searching for info.

I will do better....

[#6000bf]Do not take me too serious. You do a great job on here. [/#6000bf][#6000bf]People just have a tendancy to take things too seriously.[/#6000bf]
[#6000bf][/#6000bf]
[#6000bf]Bottom line; its a fishing website...... nothing more.[/#6000bf]
[#6000bf][/#6000bf]
[#6000bf]If people are worrying about wasting time, opening posts, they should probably just go fishing...[/#6000bf]

Don't take me too seriously either, just trying to make the machine run a little smoother, and I took advantage of an opportunity to put a few items out on the table in my reply to you, but don't consider them as all being directed at you.

If I miss understand then I'm wrong for what I said,
But it dose seem like when we do something the Moderators are all over it,
But if we say anything in are defense we are called on it,
But it did sound like we was being told what we could say ?
I'm not the only one that read it that way ether,
But so this doesn't get blown out of proportion
I'm sorry if I didn't read it the way you ment it,
I guess I dumb [Wink]

You guys better settle down or this thread is going to get deleted. [cool][:p]

Okay Daddy,
I'll be good,[sly]

On that topic.Someone told me that you can get kicked off this site.Is that true? Not that I think I'd ever do anything that bad, but I would like to know.If so who'd make that decision and what would it take?Moderator feel free to answer.Where is the line drawn?

If I had 5 hrs to catch a fish I'd spend 4 of them looking for a place that sold Rapalas.
[signature]
I doubt it.[Wink]

Rapalas get around they could be your daddy.[Wink]

+1 on the subjects, i'm getting sick of the "reports" that read i.e. Fishlake,or strawberry then you go into the thread and the person has sucked you in for a question about the ice or how to fish the lake or whatever it may be. How about Fishlake Ice conditions? or Strawberry Ice? instead. That way there will be no confusion on whether you have something to offer, when in fact you need something from everyone else. My 2 cents, i like helping with questions i just hate when people try and trick you into reading their thread.

Unfortunately, there have been a few who have lost their rights to fully participate on BFT or just on selected forums. The desion is made by moderators and administrators and is based upon the specific circumstances. I have only banned two members. The first joined BFT and immediately made the same post on mulltiple BFT forums offering no useful information and blatantly posting a link to his fishing business. The second one chose a crude username and I sent him a PM asking him to choose an appropriate user name (which he did) and I banned his crude username so that username would not appear again. BTW -- most bans are for a short period of time -- perhaps a day or two or 30 days.
