We went to the High Kelp area of the "Shoe" yesterday with two bags of frozen squid and a tank of hot sardines. There were three of us and we had a great time with both bass and "slimmies".We caught 10 calicos(on squid) all nice ones and we landed and released at least 10 barracuda each. I'm usually not a barracuda catcher but these fish were giant and a blast on 10 pound mono. The area was alive with fish and birds where every local sportboat finally arrived. It looked like the Normandy Invasion. You sure go through a lot of hooks with 10 pound but any result is worth it.

Hi there gvanzant,
Thank you for the nice report on the Horseshoe. Overall, the 31st numbers on barries was pretty underwhelming. It just goes to show ya, it only takes 45 minutes for a medium loaded sportie to end up showing pretty good numbers for the day! ha ha
It's interesting the barries went for the Sardines. Was that pretty much what the receiver had or did you guys choose them over the Anchovies? Again, thank you for the report.
Your friend,

Hi JapanRon: Yep, barracuda love sardines. We hardly ever take anchovies unless the sardines are absent. But, it looks like the sardine cycle is around he corner where they will disapear for a number of years. When that happens I'll probably shoot myself. PS How about a tiny flyrod popper for those El Dorado redears. George

Hi gvanzant,
You're darn close. Did you see me throwing that tiny float, muddler combination last night at the main lake? What I mean, were you glassin' me from across the pond? ha ha ha
Maybe the popper is the only way as I was getting snagged as much as hit on the muddler.

ya know, i would much rather fish a big sardine than a big anchovie. i like that bulky, lively bait rather than that anchovie that dies fast. but you have to make do with what you have sometimes..
