STELLWAGEN BANK,MA- Cod Fishing –May 31

Three of B-Fast’s vessel fished east of the Bank on Saturday. Two groups from NJ and one from MA, had some of the best fishing of what has proved to be a dismal spring season. Another easterly on the weekend has again warranted cancellations of both inshore fly charters for striped bass and offshore cod charters on Sunday. Further, the abysmal spring weather conditions have kept the water temps at least 10 degrees below the norm for this time of year---good news for cod fishing which appears will continue to be good into July this year.

Helder Batista’s group from Kearney, NJ and Tom Abode’s group from Piscataway, NJ were into excellent numbers of “market” cod between 10 and 15 pounds using both clam bait and jigs. Numerous big cod in the low 20’s came over the rails in a day that brought excellent weather and some of the best cod fishing of the season. Both groups went back to the Garden State with coolers full of big cod filets.

Long time client, Gary Brown and friends from Putnam, CT had one of their best days ever on B-Fast’s JANET B with Capt. Al and Ted. Again medium cod, pollock and some haddock filled the boxes. Gary’s 10-pound haddock was exceptional. 20-pound cod were the pool winners.

Fly and light-tackle striper fishing has been sporadic in the bays, harbors and estuaries.
B-Fast’s Bay fly guided Dr. Mark Hoy from Mt. Pleasant SC, in Boston on a Medical conference. Silversides and herring bait were in evidence, weather was excellent, and a favorable tide set the conditions for what should have been great fly-fishing. In Boston’s outer-harbor, mackerel are showing in good numbers. However, in Boston, due to the low water temps, the fishing was picky at best. Schoolie bass, that took chartreuse Half & Halfs, were few and far between.

Further south, in the shallow bays of Duxbury and Plymouth, the fishing has been spectacular on some days, since the water warms sooner.
Client Dean Romanow reported a great day of fishing catching 50 plus fish, on the long rod, and a few keepers in the low 30’ size class.
