Just thought any fellow fly tiers might think this is interesting.
I have wild peacocks that live on my street and the lady next to me feeds them so they stay pretty close to my home also. I am going to have plenty of free peacock hurl from this male(pic below) to last me all summer. It is mating season right now and they are starting to get on my nerves(calling all night and day). I usually have them on my roof doin their rituals. My problem is getting the tail feathers off the birds without hurting them too bad.LMAO DONT WORRY they shed them in my yard sometimes and all over the others as well.
This last year their was a male that hatched and it is an albino I wonder if its tail feather hurl would have any value to a tying vice. I havent seen its tail colors up close yet.
these peacocks really are wild. They roam free. I will post more pics later. I have been told they are too hard to catch and everyone just gave up+iI think most people on my street like them

I'd love to have some peacock feathers! If you catch one I would gladly take it off your hands. I would take a mating pair if you can catch them!

I will definitely let you guys know, The feathers arent coming off quite yet.
As for catching the birds and giving them away to you oak creek I think their will be some unhappy people on my street if I do that. so sorry BUT Im sure I can ask around and find some feathers from last year.
I will start giving the feathers away when I can get me a nice little stash of my own.

Right on! Thanks for the heads up FOD. These days anything FREE is a big plus.

FOD, those peacocks don't happen to reside in west Provo, do they?

I hatched an albino in an incubator a few years back. The white feathers are good to use. Perhaps a little more brittle, but still good. Uses are different because of the color, but still very good to have in your tying materials. They have a nice white iridescence to them.
I've never tried to 'pluck' any tail feathers. Just wait until summer and they will lose them when they molt.

nope I live right in down town SLC by the Jordan River. That is why I think they got loose and couldnt be caught because of thick cover and tall trees. I am sure that I could catch one though. alls I need is some good camo and about 1 hour. and a landing net. LOL just kidding. I just need to dress up to look like the feeder lady. I would like to get rid of the pigeons that crap all over my truck and garbage cans due to the feeding of the peacocks. Its only fair that I get some tying material out of it.
Sounds like you know of your own peacocks in provo. You should look into them.

thanks that is good to know. I think i could figure out some way to find use for the albino hurl. # 22-24 PMD's maybe? What happened to your birds you still gotem?
By the way I am not trying to pick their tails I do have a little compassion for animals. LOL
My dogs have been accused of nest robbing right after they hatched but I know someone took the chicks from the nest and have no idea what happened to them. The peacocks mated again and had only one survivor The Albino. I hope I can get some of those feathers this summer.
thanks again for the info.

Yeah, you don't want to make the neighbors mad, but it would be cool to have some running around the yard, but they probably poop alot.
There used to be some where I live and it was cool to see them walking around. Don't know what happened to them. Maybe some crazed fly tier got them.[

The chest feathers are great for soft hackles- there used to be a ton in Millville (Cache Valley). I know where most of them came from- a guy with the city asked him if they were his- he said I don't know but if you find any of them branded then their mine- bring them home- the guy believed him. I think I know who took most of them out and he didn't even let me know- they are dirty birds- they attacked the kids at the school bus- I have no problem taking care of them- I would certainly use the feathers , they are pretty but if they were in my area I would take care of them.

I heard those birds are pretty good eating. Anyone have a good recipe?

it would seem like any good Ostrich recipe would suit.LOL Or maybe a Rio Grande wild turkey.
Its funny you post this now because they are calling up a storm right now and taking them out is not the worst idea I have heard all day. I am kidding but they are very annoying.

They are pretty tough- but then I only got to cook one.
