those are some nice crappie from utah lake, good job.

Nice group of crappie!

There is a very small ramp on the river side as you go out on south dike. They put boat in there and would run out towards the ice and back about a quater mile or so and they all had wet siuts on. LOL NOT ME [fishin]

[cool][#0000ff]Hey Chuck, I launched my tube there last Friday. See attached pic. It is a short narrow ramp but plenty of room to line up the trailer and move around. Also, the depth drops off to about 6 feet very quickly...although it shallows to about 4 feet around the mouth of the river, before getting out into the main lake.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I only had a short time to check conditions but the water temp in the river was 39 degrees and only 37 in the main lake. I caught two small white bass inside the river but did not see any fish on sonar nor get any hits in the main lake...even on the minnow I dragged while casting plastics.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]As soon as the ice blows off and the water temps rise a couple of degrees the wallies should be in prespawn munch mode. I plan to check on them regularly.[/#0000ff]

Tubedude,

What kind of finder do you use in such shallow conditions?

[cool][#0000ff]In shallow water I use the standard Utah Fish Finder...pictured below.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Seriously, for tubing I get by with an Eagle Cuda 168EX. Low wattage and no real time jig display, but it provides the info I need on depth, bottom structure, temperature, etc. I do not really rely on the fish finding so much in shallow water because there are a lot of false readings...especially for anything between the bottom and top. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]However, once I get over 8-10 feet deep the readings are good enough to be helpful. But, as I tell new tubers all the time, you will not see 99% of the fish you catch because you are seldom fishing straight down. I am usually either casting all around the tube or dragging bait 10 to 15 yards behind me. I use the sonar mainly to keep myself in the right depth or over the chosen spot. Seeing fish just lets me know I am in the area or at what depth the fish are holding.[/#0000ff]

Thanks for the reply. Do you have any opinion on the side finder function on some fish finders (such as the fishin buddy)?

[cool][#0000ff]While I have not personally owned or used one, I have read or heard mostly good reports on them. They seem to work best for anglers who pursue fish that tend to cruise above the bottom and/or near the surface...like trout and sometimes crappies. A lot of fly flingers like them for trout.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]One of the reports praised the ability to look around you in a 360 degree circle and to be able to know in which direction to cast to intercept cruising fish. Most of my presentations tend to be on or near the bottom so I do not have as much need for the side finder featurs. Makes sense though.[/#0000ff]

Thanks. One day I will have to learn to toss plastics.

Pat, thanks for that info and the pic's. I haven't launched at provo harbor in 10+ years. it's always lindon or lincoln beach. the one problem with U.L. marina's is they are all diked off and the wind dosen't break up the ice. looks like it won't be long. later chuck

[cool][#0000ff]I spent a lot of time diving and snorkeling in my younger years. Buddied up with some dolphins and they taught me how to use the clicks and whistles to find prey underwater. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Found out the hard way that you can't use it to find "targets" when cruisin' for female companionship in a "social environment". Works different in the open air. Busts up all the glassware too. [/#0000ff]
