Has anyone ever used one of these reels or heard of them? My dad has 3 of them and they are his absolute favorite. The size is perfect for the size of catfish that we catch and also a good size to tie on a spinner bait and fish for bass. Another thing is the clicker which is essential for catfish. We have been looking like crazy to find some more of these reels for years with no success. Just wondering if anyone on here has used them or seen them anywhere.

Great reel...thirty years ago. Its been thirty years since I fished with my Garcia 408 spinning reel. Top of the line then, it wouldn't rate a second look today. Both rods and reels have progressed at a rate only equaled by the electronics industry. Long story short, you can still find Abu 5000 reels on the market in about eight different varieties. You can also look at thirty different reels of the same size from different manufacturers. Do a little research, and your choices are everywhere. I'd suggest Bass Pro Shops to start looking. Them and Cabellas are large and have many reels to fill your needs. You might want a clicker for Cats as well as a loud drag so everybody knows you are hooked up. With Braid you have no problems with line capacity anymore so maybe a little smaller, lighter reel with a quality drag and a clicker would fill your bill. Now you have to chose from all those out there. Lucky!

In my opinion anything from Abu Garcia is quality gear.

Those are dependable reels. Some of the Wallmarts still carry them. They are usually under the glass counter in the fishing section. Otherwise use the aforementioned information.[cool]
