Thinking about putting the boat in Oneida tomorrow and was wonder if anyone has some pointers. I've never boat fished it and only shore fished one time. What should I be targeting. I'm just running a small boat That i have set up with a trolling motor and fish finder. Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks

When you mentioned that it was open to launch boats on a previous post I thought of coming up tomorrow. I am going to wait until next weekend probably to make my way up there though. Anyhow, I would think the water is still a bit cold to target some of the Walleye and Smallmouth, but you could try trolling for some trout!!! Not, saying you couldnt catch anything other than that, but just thinking it is a bit early and that is why I am waiting a week or two. Let us know how you do. Maybe, we could meet up there sometime and I could show you a thing or two.

I was thinking the same thing. I still might give the smallies and walleye a try but was thinking trolling would be best. I have never trolled for trout before. What would i need to buy to gear up for them. I do have small spoons and roostertails, and a bunch of castmasters but that is about it. Any hints would really help.

Try "Long-Lining" Rapalas from the back of the boat. Let the line out about 75-100 yards and just troll between 1.8 and 3.2 MPH. Or you could buy some "pop gear" add a Kokanee killer to the end with a piece of nightcrawler. That might spark the interest of a trout!!!

I do have rapalas but they are all three inches or longer. What would be the best size to try that out. I would assume sinking ones would be best to get down deeper as well.

You can target the eyes as well just target shallow, rocky shores. They are getting ready to spawn and spawn in 2-10 ft of water. I have heard they are doing very well were cotton wood flows in but i havnt heard from anyone on the lake.

can you get a boat to that point or is it all shore fishing where cottonwood comes in. Do you know what they are catching them on?

no they shore fish were cotton wood comes in its right at the inlet. They use rapalas or jigs threw there. but they say half the fish spawn the lake though.

My wife and i fished the lake for about 2-3 hours but to no avail. We trolled a couple different set ups and fished the shore with rapalas and jigs for awhile. We fished between the launch and the campground. Two other boats launched and went further up. It was a nice day to get out though, tons of people fishing the river below the dam.
