I arrived at the river a little after noon today. First cast in hooked into a nice little brown. Next few casts brought a few more hits and a few more fish. After about 30 minutes of this it went dead for the rest of the day and never picked back up. One of the strangest things I have ever experienced while out fishing. I can almost always pick up a few fish even if its slow fishing. Not today. I fished numerous awesome looking runs and could not pull out anything. I managed to pull out a total of six fish, two browns, four whities. Hopefully it will be better next time I head out.

I would have thought that the Rainbows would have wanted to play. Were you using egg paterns?

I didn't, thought about it but never threw one out. An egg sucking leech probably would have been a good idea. I didn't see any one pull out any fish while I was there either. One guy told me they were pulling out 20"+ rainbows on rubber legs for quite a while up above the "Fun Farm Bridge". He said they were there around 9:00 AM. I Tried there all afternoon and didn't have any action other than getting broken off once. The barometric pressure had to be all over the place with the storms coming through and all that. That's why I think it went downhill after 1:00 or so. Thats when it started getting stormy. Just a weird day. I'll have to try to sneak out from work and get up there again this week.

Hey,
If it makes you feel better, I've been nailing the fish for the last two months, and I went out yesterday and only caught a whitefish and a sucker [pirate]. maybe we all just need to be kept humble every now and then[crazy]. lets hope we get em next time!
[signature]
I needed a humbling too. The average trout size I have caught in the last two weeks have all been around 18". I guess you can't always expect to catch fish like that. Unless you are always throwing huge streamers. haha. You can wish though right? [Wink]

Cripes, I must be about the most humble person this year then. Other than my first steelhead trip this year and a trout at Ririe in February I've been skunked every time out so far!

i headed up there today and didnt do any good but one whitefish and a broke rod. we started by the bridge off the highway. we took a right there and headed down to where there was that pond there that runs off the river. we fished there and i waded all the way up and around the corner fishin all those runs and riffles. i had a few hits but nothin solid i was use koffmens, goldenstone beadheads, hairs ears, lightning bugs,2 colors of san juans red and orange, zebra midges 2 colors red and black. and 2 differnt types ones were normal and then i had some that had white tuffs comin over the top and out the front, prince nymphs. i threw purple variations of some and i didn't have anythink. we continued down river to the boat dock then to chester dam and then fun farm bridge. at the chester dam i was tryin on a new fly and dropper when i got distracted by my counsin or uncle or somebody and stepped away from my truck and just then and only then did a gust of wind come up. i hand my rod so that the reel was on seat and the rod was headed out the door in the crack ( the door was open all the way and i was in it and didn't ever intend on walkin away). and that bleepin bleepin bleep bleepity blimpin wind slamed my door shut on my rod. it snapped fairly clean about a foot below the top of the butt section ( i have a 2 peice rod). yeah i was not a happy man.and it was just as i was gonna hit this awsome lookin run right below the chester dam.i was irrate it wasn't funny. so yeah that was at around 3 or 4 so yeah the rest of the day was pretty much shot after that. it still makes me so mad tellin about it that i keep messin up the words that i am tryin to type. so yeah there is my report of how my day went.

Sorry about your rod. I've had that happen so many times I'm embarrased to admit it. [blush]

Have you tried egg patterns on the Henry's at this time of year?

Windriver

Yeah, your bad day on the Henry's Fork beat out mine. Thanks for the perspective[crazy]. Sorry about the rod.
[signature]
its all good. i mean whats the worst that can happen now. I get to buy a new rod!!!!!!!!! so yeah it is ok. i'm glad that i didn't buy a new rod a couple of weeks ago like i was gonna. then i would really be pissed right now. but no i haven't tried egg patterns up there that was the first time that i have fly fished up there. i'm normally on the south fork i know that river and where to go so yeah that is where i normally go its close and i love it up there. i have used egg patterns on the south fork this time of the year and they work gook i usally us a pink one. the last two years is the first year that i have ever used them. that and san juans.

I think they make a Ugly Stick fly rod[Smile]

Bummer about the rod man. At least you get a new one now Smile Sounds like the fishing is still slow up there. I decided I would try to fish the SF yesterday and today and try to find some decent water. Getting ready to post a report right now.

I fished it for about five hours till it started getting dark today. Had a blast! Didn't catch anything brag-worthy numbers wise, but the few fish I did catch were a hoot! I was fishing around fun farm bridge and man was there a huge hatch. Lost more than I actually caught, and had one so big that it took me into my backing and then came off.

Can't wait to get back! Smile

they are in there if you can find them. and bonk them on the nose most of the time. but that is what i love about the challnege. fly fishin is so much more intimate then bait fishin. well at least for me.

There are several different types of rods that have a lifetime warranty no matter how you break it. He are several that I know about Redington, St. Croix, and Sage I think. I am not sure if there are others. I have a Redington and I hvae broke it several times. Everytime I just send it in with $25 for shipping and they send me a new one. The last time that upgraded me to a Rod that cost $700. They are great about it.

Temple Fork Outfitters also has a lifetime warranty and have given me not problems when I have a break. I have sent my Winston in four times over the last six years with no problems.
