I finally ventured out to the South Fork again. I had been staying away because the water is so much higher than anything I have ever fished in my life before. Also the crazy flows usually put fish down for a while until they stabilize again. Well I figured I could at least find a few hungry fish that wanted to play so I headed out after work.

Yesterday I drove around for about an hour looking for water I could fish. Found one big spinning hole and stripped a big streamer through it. Got one hit but missed it then I moved on. Drove for about another half an hour or so and finally found a promising looking run. Nothing at first on the big streamer so I changed to my other rod and used a wooly bugger. Fish started hitting like crazy, mostly little ones though so I could set the hook fast enough. Those little guys strike so fast. I managed to pull out a little cutt (12") and a fatty bow (14"). I would have stayed later but had to take off because thunderstorms were heading in fast. I decided I would come back today and try my luck.

Today I got to the same spot around 6:00 PM or so. Threw out and pulled out a couple cutts and a rainbow. I missed a few other hits as well. All of them were about 12". I got cold and decided I would try to find another spot. I drove down to the Lorenzo boat ramp and the water was really high. I couldn't drive to the ramp because the water had made a little channel through those dips that you have to go through. I climbed across the wooden fencing and made it to the river. I threw out the wooly bugger for a while and managed to get one nice hit but didn't get the hook set. I decided I would switch to a different streamer that would be a little more visible in the nasty water. A 16" brown decided to hit it and gave me a good run. Overall I've had a good couple of days considering how crazy the water has been. Nothing huge but still an awesome time.

Nice fish for the high water. If you think this is high, wait until the weekend. It will be higher by about another 4500cfs. Also, if you don't mind, what wooly bugger is that. I have seen it in many pictures of yours and a few others. Looks to be black with green tinsel and a beadhead? Nice report.

Thanks. conehead olive or black chenille that is "sparkly". I always stock up on them when I go to Boise. They have them at the Orvis shop there and I haven't been able to find them anywhere else. I suppose I could tie some up if I went out and bought some materials. They really seem to get the attention of the fish and have worked on every water I have tried them on. All around its a great fly.

Some nice looking fish...thanks for the post and the pics.

Could you post a picture of the fly? I have some materials around and have a pretty good idea what it consists of, but would like to be sure I am seeing what I think I see. The sparkle is what I am not quite sure on. I have some others I need to tie up before I head to Henry's Lake this year also.

it looks like a cone head green hornet PRO down in poky has that chenile, Ace might also. I tie that minus the cone

I use them and would get them at all season anglers and they called them rubber buggers!

Its not a rubber bugger (good bass fly). It is a cone head woolly bugger. And all seasons anglers doesn't have this fly. I have looked there. The Hyde shop doesn't have it either, just got back from there. Here is a picture. Hope it helps.

I tie the rubber buggers for bass. I haven't done particulary well on them yet but I think I need to tie them weekless so I can drag them across the rocks at Ririe.

Thanks for the pic. It looks easy enough to tie.

Shane,
Thanks for sharing. I went to Idaho Anglers (the Orvis shop) this afternoon and purchased several of each color. $1.65 each. I thought that was more than reasonable. Now lets hope the trout on the west side of the state find them as tasty-looking as do your east-siders!! Do they produce well at Henry's Lake? Thanks again. Mike

Well, this is what I came up with. No bead head since I am out and Sportsman's as usual is out of stock.

They work great on the Boise through town as well. I fished it today and did pretty well. I'll be posting a report tomorrow or the next day. Probably will hit it again tomorrow. I'm not sure if they work well at Henry's because I haven't fished there yet. I've only been on the eastern side of the state since November. So I'm still learning more about the area every day.

Good looking flies you tied up prvrt
