My wal mart in Florence (AL) has several of them. If they're pretty good then I might consider getting one to put my shakespeare baitcast reel on, for fishing my girl's pond and throwing spinner and buzzbaits.

They definately still make them. My buddy has a few in his shop.

I'm going to give some advice here, and keep in mind that this is only my 2 cents. For throwing spinners, spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and even fishing live bait, less expensive rods are perfectly fine. If you're fishing soft plastics or jigs, sensitivity and hook setting ability are very important. IMHO, in the case you want to fish a Texas-rig, Carolina-rig, split shot rig, jig-n-pig, shaky head, spider jig, etc... get yourself a higher end rod. When I was starting off, I bought a bunch of $20 to $40 rods. Looking back, I'd still use any one of those rods for spinnerbaits, topwater, cranks but definitely not for soft plastics.

When you throw cranks or spinnerbaits or topwaters, the fish gets hooked by biting the lure... plus you don't need much sensitivity. You don't need to really "set the hook" with a crank because the fish basically does it for you. In fact, if you had a rod with excessive backbone and a really fast taper, you might rip the lure out of the fish's mouth in a lot of cases. The opposite is true for soft plastics. If you're fishing a Texas-rig, you might not even feel a subtle strike with a cheaper rod, and if you do feel it, its probably not stiff enough in the right places to have an easy time setting the hook.

A better rod will have stiffness without the extra weight because the rod will have more graphite material and less of the resin that holds the graphite together. This will make the rod more sensitive and also make for an easier time setting the hook. Once I learned this by experimenting with different equipment, I really put the knowledge to good use.

If you're going to have more than one rod with you when you fish, have one with a moderate-fast action (regardless of whether its medium or medium/heavy or heavy). The moderate-fast action rod doesn't have to be expensive or ultra-light. Use that rod for your spinners, spinnerbaits, cranks, etc. Use your other rod for worms, craws, and other soft plastics. For that rod, save a couple bucks and get something better and with a fast or extra-fast action. That difference in rods will help you detect a strike and also be beneficial when you need to pull the hook through the worm and lodge it into the lip of the fish.

And, yes; I am sorry I made this so #@^$ long.

do you happen to have a price..i have a wallmart by me and would like to see if they have any..

ive used alot of different rods in my days.high end and low end price..this rod always seemed to be easy for casting but good hook setting ability it seemed to me to be a well balanced rod for a low end price..just an opinion..

Yeah, actually I do. I was in wal mart today while they put new tires on my truck. If I remember correctly, it was around $23 bucks.

The more info you can share martini, the longer I'll read. don't care how &%@#in' long it is haha.

I have a 7' Berkley Lightning Rod, Not currently with a reel on it. When I get me a really good spinning rod, I planned on putting it on that. Have an opinion on the lightning rod? should I go ahead and use it with the reel I've been using? Is it sensitive enough?

I might do it. I need a casting rod. I had a couple of shakespeares but I sold em in a yard sale. Didn't like em.

Will do. I don't know when I will get it, because I'm doing everything I can to save money, but when I do get it, I'm sure I'll post about it Smile
