Thinking of hitting up Pelican on Saturday and was wondering how its fishing right now? Are the bass starting to turn on yet? The Gills? Are the bugs out yet? Any info would be appreciated cause its about a 3 1/2 hour drive for me so I want to try to get an update before making that long of a trip!

I fished it Saturday with some friends. There was 3 boats between the 6 of us. One boat had some really experienced bass fishers, chucking gear, -jigs, drop shot, etc. They did fairly well considering the cold water early season conditions, 52 degrees on the north side of the lake. They fished in the heavy cover in 6-9 feet of water. My boat was fishing flies, we caught several bluegill on Chironomids under a bobber, and a bass on a small bugger, and a bass on a 6-7 inch triple combo bugger with rubber legs, all connected together with backing. It was cool, just not weedless. I fished the edges of the reeds and did the best I could. The third boat was some green river guides and were throwin flies in some deeper water- maybe 30-50 feet away from the "salad" and pullin in a few bass as well. Åll in all pretty slow. Nobody was rakin em in, but good times none the less. I saw quite a few boats, cruising to different parts of the lake trying to find a better spot? It needs a couple more weeks of warm weather to turn em on good. Hope this helps.

How were the bugs?

I'm sure there were some bugs, I remember seeing some larger midges maybe size 16 buzzing around in the morning, but not anything that mattered to the fish. If you are worried about trying to breathe out there - not a problem

Now that's an answer to a question! Welcome to the board FR!

That feller in the picture looks like a handsome devil...
Bugs were just how they should be. 90% of them don't bite. Fish were in the deep salad, and a black blue jig with a rage chunk for a trailer worked great. Don't forget the 50# braid.

I thought he looked familiar.

There will be a Junior Bass Tournament on Pelican Saturday with about 20 boats and 40 kids between 8 and 18. It will be the first of 3 qualifiers for the kids, vieing for a spot in the FLW Junior Championship. It is a paper event, measure and release. Go out and cheer em on !!!! Hopefully I will get my trolling motor fixed and will be there as a boat captian.
