I Got out to the dam yesterday afternoon on my toon. Primarily fished the North bays for crappie. Tossed tube jigs under a bobber tipped with a little bit of crawler. Worked the brush line and the stickups for quite a while... no takers.

I went out a little deeper and worked the depths of the bays where I was able to coax two nice crappie to take the pineview special (Black and Chartreuse tube jig). One was a real slab at about thirteen inches and the other was a little less at ten. That was about it though.

The water temperatures are likely a little bit too cold just yet for the fish to be shallow. I would suppose the fish are staging in a little bit deeper water, waiting for the temps to be right for the spawn. Shouldn't be too long now and they'll be up in the shallows and the brush and the fun will be on!

Great report. I'm looking forward to chasin' some crappie and perch out there this year. By the way did you take any pics?

Not too cold at all. Once the water floods up any more it will be even harder to locate them. Some year's the prespawn bite is on last part of March. I tried too on Wed. NO BITES. Also not much brush in the bays left at ALL compared to last year. I can't believe how quickly it deteriorated with just a single year of high water. It's going to be tough this year. The water is already too high for ideal prespawn conditions of the past years to find them easily.
Yeah attached is a picture of the larger one: Sorry about camera phone quality:

As for the water temps, I personally have a bit easier time locating and catching the crappie when the water is in the high fifties or low sixties. They seem to be a bit tighter to structure and in greater numbers during the spawn. But that is just a novice's observation. The brush structure seems to be a lot less in some of the areas I usually try to hit too. Hopefully the weather will stabilize and warm up the lake. Maybe we'll have a few good weeks of fishing the crappie like have been had in years past. Anywho good luck to all.
