Report,

Did the Daniels, Deep Creek & Devil tour Friday the 24th of April. Had some hit at Daniels using flies but only had one to the boat and none to the net. The one that I got to the boat looked to be 16 inch or so and had enough sass to go airborne twice. There were not many on the finder there compared to normal. In the past I would curse the fish cops for over-stocking so I guess that I will keep my mouth shut now over the few that are in there since they can now grow large without competition. The float tube person that was there (fly goddess?) seem to be slaying them.

Deep Creek was better for the brute force and ignorance technique and I trolled rappalas to take a couple there. The one in the photo went a bit over 16".

Devil Creek was a bust with off color water and fish showing deep on the finder and not many at that.

Well you did better than I've done at Deep Creek this year. The first time I went, I had maybe 8 hits and missed them all. The second time I went, I probably had 15 hits, and finally got one little guy to the tube. Don't know what the deal is, they've been hitting it hard, sometimes nearly pulling the rod out of my hand, but no hookups. I landed plenty when I went there last fall, so I'm hoping things change as it warms up.

I hit Daniels Monday and I agree on full of sass. I had a couple that went airborne but they were well over 16"[Wink]

Maybe you were using too big of flies.

OH WAIT! I forgot, there aren't any fish in Daniels.[cool]

Maybe. I was using size 8 and 10 leeches. I tried scuds for a bit but couldn't get hits. I guess I'll have to tye up some 12 leeches and maybe break down and try deep midging. Finals are done on Friday, and then I'm going to hit those southern Idaho waters hard and figure this out.

I know I am all about Chironomids, but NYMPHS were the ticket. #12 and #14's. If you tie, check out Wiese's Four Feathers

That is a tasty little morsel. I don't have any lemon wood duck, but I'm sure I can find a decent substitute in my materials. Thanks for the tip, I will be tying some of those.

I like the looks of that nymph. I am not real good at tying nymphs yet nor do I have all the materials. It said that The Monatan Fly Shop makes them, but they only sell to other stores. Is there any place that sells them?

Maybe see if Jimmy can get them. I tie my own, so I don't know who sells them..........GOT YOUR BOAT YET!!!!!!! ARGH! I can't stand this!
You do realize, we have to put that IDAHO STICKER on these?!!!

I wonder when they will be available . I tried to buy them at DMV when I registered my boats for the year . They said I needed to go to the Parks and Recreation Dept. ? Curt G.

No pontoon yet. [inline em_icon_blue_Sad.gif]

I may have to talk to Jimmy's or see what I can come up with tying my own.

You should only need the sticker if you put the trolling motor on.

Curt, you may try someplace like a boat dealer or some gas stations have them also. I get mine at Chevron in Blackfoot.

The Chevron next to Flying J or the one on Oakridge . Thanks Curt G.

The one buy Flying J.

I have not tried tho this year since they built the new store. I been waiting for the new pontoon so I do not have to register 2 pontoon's this year.

It reads:

Idaho residents - $10. for motor, Out Of State - $20.
$5. for non motorized. That sounds like everyone to me....right?
Plus they make it sound like Electric motors are a carrier...GAS I understand, but electric.....no.

Oh, THAT sticker. I thought you were talking about the regular boat registration. Who knows when that sticker will be out.

Flygoddess,

Thanks for the tips. I have done so well at big D (in past years) with my standard outfit that I have not thought of the need to diversify but you are obviously a few rungs up the ladder in the experience and knowledge department. This time I committed the ultimate sin and told my buddy that I was going to catch dozens as I left town. Actually the hits I had and the one almost landed were on a huge ugly olive mohair and marabou leach looking thing that I tied myself. It was coming undone by the end and was getting longer by the minute (I am not much of a fly tie person). I will try to find some of what you are recommending (for sale) because they look too small and detailed for my ability level.

Do you recommend that I run two flies in series such as I have seen you recommend before for Henry's (with the Y pattern)?

ABSOLUTELY! One about a foot off the bottom and the other 2' to 3'. If trolling I like the "Y" connection with a leech or larger fly (bait fish also) on the longer and a nymph on the shorter.
If the fish are being fussy, I will run two different nymphs.
Around Memorial, I think the Chironomid action should pick up.

I am no pro as far as Daniels, but I did figure it out after a couple of getting skunked trips years ago. I actually keep a journal on it. The same with Henry's. They are both TECHNICAL lakes, but once you find the recipes they produce like crazy.

I would like to try it again in a couple of weeks. All depends on the progress of the rental house repairs and ......oh yeah.....MY NEW BOAT!!!! ARGH!!!!
