Can anyone tell me about Lake Mead fishing, I may be heading down there next weekend, not a fishing weekend per se because I will have my ski boat, but I will take some gear and probably do a little fishing.

I would like to get some stripers but have never fished for them before, I have caught some LMB's on tube jigs. Tips and techniques are appreciated, I think I will be staying in Overton? and launching in that area. Thanks Remo

It has been a long time since I fished Lake Mead so I am no longer familiar with the names of the bays, but fishing for stripers is pretty easy. I like to throw crankbaits at them and use vertical jigs. Tubes also work pretty well and you can suspend cut-bait for them as well.

I like to use a Rapala shad rap 1/4oz. with 8 lb mono and cast toward shore in 8-20 feet of water. You will hit stripers and LM/SM bass using that technique.

The water may be warm enough for the stripers to be feeding heavily on the shad. If thats the case, you can look for the "boils" and cast right into the middle of it with anything that resembles a shad.

You can also use the same techniques as you would use for LMB and you will be successful.

Be sure to give us a fishing report when you get back!

I lived there for 7 years and fished Mead a bunch. My best advise however is to check out the Nevada board.

Due to low water, Overton no longer exists. I hope you're launching at echo and staying in that area. The fishing is great this time of year, if you get a day or two without the springtime wind which can get horrendous. Bass will be spawning or post spawn which is a great time, schoolie stripers will be everywhere you go. If the bass are done with the spawn they'll be on huge topwater bite, but they'll hit almost anything else too. Find a deep rocky shoreline and troll for stripers or a sit around and bait fish for them, either way you'll catch alot of 14-20 inch fish. The lake is really low, so alot of the good spots are high and dry. Good time of year to go, i've caught most of my nice bass from mead in may and june.
