ok so i am bored and can't sleep, and I am searching the f&g fish planting plans it says they are planning on planting 9,000 kokanee in deep creek. I have heard that they use to plant them in here. I am pretty excited. Anyone know how long it takes for them to mature and run?

Just like their ocean-going brothers and sisters, the sockeye, they have a three or four-year cycle. There are early and late spawning types, and both can be found in Idaho. The Fish and Game is experimenting with triploid kokanee in Lucky Peak on a very limited basis. These could result in bigger kokes. So, get that tackle box loaded up with lots of wedding rings and shoepeg corn!!!! Mike

I caught several kokanee from deep creek back 1998ish. They were some gigantic hogs compared to the ones I get out of Porky (17-18 inches and FAT). I am thrilled to hear they are restoring them in there! Fish seem to do well in there, and I think they have a different food source than the BILLIONS of lamo planter rainbows they put in there, so yipee.

It would probably depend on how big they are when they plant them, but I'm pretty sure the ones @ Porky are on a 3-4 year cylce like homeboy said.

That would be awesome if they restored them in there! They are so fun to get into especially while ice fishing! I'm surprised that they were bigger in Deep Creek than Porky...seems like bigger water "should" produce bigger kokes but there must be more to it than that!!!

The size of the fish are directly related to the adundance of zooplankton. That is why the the Shoshone tribe biologists have dumped phosphates in Redfish Lake in the past. I had a class up there studying the salmon runs when the tribal biologist was doing just that. They had discovered the zooplankton were declining rapidly. The average Joe might get upset that this will disturb the water clarity, but one must remember that when the sockeye runs were healthy, the bottom of Redfish was lined with rotting salmon, thus contributing to the zooplankton numbers.

i had wondered what there size use to be when they were in there, i had heard they didnt do very good. But if they get that size[sly]. With how pink the bows are up there i am excited to get some kokes in a couple years.

That's great news. I'm always happy when I have a chance to get into different species, and that's one I haven't caught yet. I also noticed that they've planted Winder. Just bows, but maybe they'll get some bass and panfish in it soon.

i wish they were better on posting on the f&g page on what fish they put were. It seems they only put the rainbows on there.

ya I think that's about the only thing they plant anymore. Anything besides a bow has to pretty much make it on their own against nature (and everything else).
