Spent a half-day Saturday 5/9 up at Horsethief.
Weather was about 55 degrees with a light breeze. We trolled for a couple hours with no success. There were about 8 boats on the water and many people fishing from shore. I was very surprised at the number of people camping there; every spot was taken.
We didn't see a single fish caught from boat or shore, nor did we see a single fish jump during this time. It was very strange, like the lake was completely dead.
However, as soon as the sun was down, there was an interesting transformation. In just a span of a few minutes, fish started jumping everywhere. We pulled the canoe into what looked to be the greatest concentration and started catching on nearly every cast. They seemed to take everything we threw out there (flies, lures, spinners, etc).
The lake hasn't been planted yet, so everything in there is a holdover. I was expected to get into some bigger size, but everything we caught and released was 12" - 14". They were evenly split between rainbows and browns. I was hoping we'd see some in the 17" range but we had a ball nonetheless.
