Hey all I was just wondering what the camping rules or etiquitte is in Idaho? Do you have to camp in only designated campgrounds or can you camp pretty much anywhere on a river or lake or in the woods that isnt private property? I mean if I am out in the woods and see a nice open spot to park my camper in the woods and spend a few days hunting or hiking/fishing is that ok?

When I go camping i like to feel like im out in the boonies not in Bobs parking lot with 50 others people if you know what i mean.

I know there are several spots throughout the state that I've seen people set up camping in that are not designated camping sites. If I'm not mistaken (and I may be) you can pretty much camp where ever on public land as long as it's not designated as a no camping area.

Thats a good question. I have wondered this same thing sense they made the new laws about being of trail. I have camped in non desgnated spots but only in my tent so not sure about a camper. The best thing would be call the local rangers office. Also be sure you check on weather you can have a fire or not.

Generally on public land you can camp at those pulloffs with a tent or camper. I seldom use designated campgrounds and have never had a problem in Idaho or any of the western states. Some places have restrictions to campgrounds but they are usually well marked or pretty obvious such as National Parks or National Wildlife Areas.

As long as it is public and not posted you should be good to go. I rarely camp in camp grounds as I believe that public land is here for the public to use, not to commercialize and nickel and dime us to death with fees. I hate trying to go and relax in a small area with 30 other people and their screaming kids, dogs, dirt bikes, atv's, etc. I would move back into town to a trailer park if I wanted that. One thing I do hate is when people walk thru my camp site. To me, that is just rude. I try to respect others privacy and expect the same. The Rottweiler and German Shepard usually enforce that etiquette tho. The places I see most posted are usually around camp grounds. They enjoy forcing you into their little corral to make you pay.[Wink] Just remember to tread lightly and pack it out.

If you camp on forest service ground there is a 14 or 16 day limit . Then you have to move 5 or 7 miles to a new spot . To stop people from setting up for the summer . Not positive on the exact number . Curt G.
