Been a month since i went to the great salmon river in challis idaho. But been a little busy and lazy to post this. I know its not much to do with utah flyfishing but thought I would share this any way. Any of you that get the chance to fish for steelhead dont pass up the oppertunity. I made it up for three days last month hooked up 24 times and managed to get 9 of these b run hogs in my hands. definatly some of the biggest and hardest to land fish i have caught. The fish I caught ranged from 37in 17lb to 24in about 5lb the one pictured below i brought home to put in the smoker (delicious) if you happen to make it next year 8wt rod and 10lb leader is bare min. anyway its a great time and worth the trip.

Very nice fish! Makes me homesick for Great Lakes Steelhead. Maybe I'll have to start trying my luck in Idaho. What's the best time of year to go after them? Do they get good fall and spring runs?

Your best time to go after those guys is in the first couple of weeks in april. If you check the idaho dwr site you can see how many fish are coming over the last dam, and when the are coming. The fall run is not as good as the spring but there is a small run. It all depends on water levels and temps too. They have A run steelheads and B run steelheads. The A runs come a littlte eailier than the B and thet tend to be smaller 22in. 26in. B runs fallow about 7-14 days later and are quite bigger 30in-40in

were abouts were you fishing for the B's. I always like squaw creek or were the east fork and salmon meet.

The idaho steelies are diffrent than the great lakes. Our spring run fish head up the rivers in the fall and stay in the rivers all winter, sense they go up to 900 + miles. You can do well in the fall but you have to travel alot further to get them. You can usualy find fish any time from october to end of april.

Thats real close to where iget them. If You know where doyles turkey farm is thats where i got the one that is pictured. Any where within 10-15 miles of that location

i dont, is it up or down river from challis?

its up river from challis. If you konw where dead mans hole is its about 3-5 miles above that. The other pic there is from across river and just down stream from dead mans

Yea east fork is just upstream on highway 75, almost up to clayton

i have fished there were the EF pours comes into the salmon not with much luck. But i have never tried fishing those big holes like the dead mans hole. I imagine if you have a drift boat at the mouth of it you could do good. but i am a shoreman and just cant get any drift in them. I am sure they hold more fish. If you have any tricks let me know.
