I have fished east canyon quite a few times and thought there was only trout in that lake. I read a report last week about smallies in there and I just read somthing about crappies being in there as well. Can anyone tell me what species of fish there are in east canyon!!

ya. we fished east canyon yesterday and had a great day and a lot of success. there is a good population of smallies and crappie as well as the trout. (tiger trout, rainbows and some browns as well) hope that helps out a bit. i dont know who put the crappie in or when but there are some really nice smallies, even right off the docks.

According to the sign in the Marina there are Rainbow Tiger and brown trout as well as Smallmouth bass and Crappie. Personally I have cought Rainbows, tigers, and smallies there but no browns or crappies.

Hi,
The other folks that replied are correct about EC fish species. Attached are pics of my biggest EC smallie and crappie from last year. The browns are in there, just not many of them. The only one I've ever caught was accidently while fishing for smallies. There are also a handful, and I mean handful, of large (10 lb+) cutthroats in there, along with the occasional cuttbow. Thanks,
Looks like I will be hitting east canyon a little more this year.

Nice fish!! I am acutally glad there are that many species in that lake. That way if one isnt biting you can try for others.

Thanks! ;0) Yeah, EC is great for all of the different speicies. I think I hit it just over 20 times last year, which is alot for me. Good luck!, Fred K.

You know, I may have spilled the beans on the crappie in EC but I don't really mind because most people that catch them there do it by accident. I don't mind sharing any information with responsible and courteous fisherman about how to catch the crappie there; I just don't want to see the lake trashed by idiots that read a good post and go forth to spread their filth and harvest any big fish they catch. That's why I feel so sketchy about even posting anything informative on here. I know that the great fishermen here on BFT will add the knowledge to their arsenal but respect the rules instead of abusing the privelege. Send a PM and i'll help you out but don't do much more posting about this topic unless you want a hundred illegals trashing the lake every day.

Check out the Roughin' it outdoors (kutv.com) snapshot for the week of April 11, and you will see a Cutthroat reported as 30" and 14 pounds caught in East Canyon

Yup, that is no doubt one of the big EC cutts that I was refering to. One of my fishing buddies is friends with the guy who nailed it, and sent me a pic. What a trophy fish! It was mighty cool of him to release it too [cool] Last year another guy caught an 11 pounder out of EC too. There was a pic of it on the board at the Riverdale Sportsmans for awhile. There's a few of them in there [

hey i hear of all these big fish being caught up on EC but everytime i have been up there including last thursday, we have always caught a bunch of fish but none have been really nice sized. we have trolled, jigged, and thrown rapalas at them but with no success for the big ones. most are about 14 to 16 inches. we really dont like to bait fish cause we catch and release. any hints on what to change to find the bigger ones?
