No, I am not live minnow fishing in Utah! I am visiting my brother-in-law in Texas and decided to give live minnow fishing a try there, where it is legal. My brother-in-law is not a fisherman, but he lives on the shoreline of one of the popular lakes near Chandler, Texas. I talked him into buying some fishing rods and reels so we could go fishing together. At a local fishing store we also bought some live minnows, some brass Aberdeen hooks, some bobbers, and some sinkers. We fished Lake Palestine (pronounced Palesteen) this morning (in my brother-in-law’s boat) and just got off the lake. I had a new experience and an enjoyable time. I put the hook through the minnow’s lips and the minnow would swim with the hook in its lips until a fish would come up and grab it. I caught three crappie, one white bass, one catfish, and two sand bass in just a few hours. Great fun!

Sounds like a fun time Lloyd. Never had the experience of trying live minnows.

It was great fun Kent! I am not sure why live minnow fishing is not a problem here. Maybe it is because trout fishing is not a big deal here. However, I really don't know.

[cool][#0000ff]Hey Lloyd, sounds like you broadened your fishing horizons. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Not a problem there because Texas is ANY STATE IN THE UNION besides Utah. Set your watch back 100 years when you fish in Utah.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Hurry back. The walleyes and perch in Starvation are tuning up for a return match with ya.[/#0000ff]

Nice report Lloyd, I agree fishing with minnows is a blast. Maybe someday we will get the chance to use them here in Utah but I won't hold my breath.[crazy]

Pat, I believe that I caught my first crappie on this trip also. However, there is no fish I would rather catch than a walleye. I know that is a big secret. After a week of cold weather in Utah, a week in California, and now a week in Texas, I am ready to do some walleye fishing at Starvation. What do the fishing reports say about Starvation, and when is the best time to go?

[cool][#0000ff]The water temps are still a few degrees less than ideal, but the fish are starting to move into their summer areas...even if they are not biting to well yet. Some knowledgeable eye-whackers have been scoring on the traditional bottom bouncer rigs but they have not moved shallow nor have they gotten aggressive enough for crankbaits and jigs yet.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]SOON. (Probably waiting for you to come back.)[/#0000ff]

Hey Lloyd !! fishing with real live bait can be very exciting !! They don't allow live minnows because they don't want the little critters moved from lake to lake to compete with the hatchery raised babies that the majority of the public pursues. So we are left to use our only legal live baits like crawlers, leeches, and crayfish. You can still do the TD thing and drag that dead minner. By the way, a Sand Bass and White Bass are the same thing. It took me awhile to catch on when I was in OK. My fishing partner was very explicit when I would talk about " white bass" and he would correct me " sand bass". Lots of wipers and stripers out there also.
Yup live minnows would help catch more walleye and perhaps prevent "crash and boom" cycles form occuring.

I hope to see live perch allowed at Starvation or Yuba.

Anyone from the DWR reading this should consider.

I am having a little trouble with the computer I am using so I will try again-------
Thanks for the clarification on the White Bass and Sand Bass. I was told by a local fisherman in the tackle shop that there were Sand Bass in the lake. When I caught a bass species I didn't recognize I assumed it was the Sand Bass he was talking about. I recognized the White Bass when I caught it because I have caught so many of them at Utah Lake. However, the bass species I assumed was a Sand Bass looks a little like a Smallmouth but with a bar on the sides.

They also have Stripers in the lake, and they have a fish they call a "Hybrid." I asked him if the hybrid was a cross between a White Bass and a Striper and he said, "Yes." Therefore, they must have Wipers in the lake as well. Anyway, I caught four different fish species in a few hours. Three of the species I recognized, and the fourth remains unidentified I guess. Thanks again for the information.
